I tried a new class today ...

Friday, June 27, 2014

One of our challenges on Azures this week is to try something new out of our comfort zone. For me, I went way out of my comfort zone today. I am not a yoga person. I'm not good at it and never imagined I'd try a gym class in it. An activity I do love is water aerobics. One of my friends in the class has been asking me to try a yoga class that takes place 30 minutes after our water aerobics class, so this was the perfect week to try it since I can get points for it. emoticon Another lady in our class also kept encouraging me, saying I would enjoy it. Aside from getting points, I felt more comfortable because it was a Silver Sneakers program so I felt I'd be able to at least participate without being too far behind the class. I hoped that it wouldn't be too much after my first class, but hey … there were points available. emoticon Unfortunately, neither lady from water aerobics could make the yoga class today but I went anyway.

There were about 20 ladies in the class, ranging in age from 40 to maybe mid-60's. I was talking to the lady next to me and when she heard I was new she gave me a quick lesson in things that would help me. The instructor also noticed I was new, introduced herself, and told me to do what I could, don't worry if I couldn't do all of it, and to be near a chair in case I needed to catch my balance. emoticon

The class started with low lights, soft music, and breathing exercises … while sitting on a chair. Okay, I was feeling pretty good about that. emoticon The instructor was encouraging us to get in touch with our inner self and think about how our bodies felt. From here, she started warming up our different parts, starting with arms, legs, and then core … while still seated. I was still feeling pretty good. emoticon

We then stood up and did 4 variations of the warrior pose. I liked them, and I felt right in there with the rest of the class. We did a tree pose, which I did fairly well. I won't remember all the poses, but really the only problem I had was a little bit of balance issue while standing on one leg, the other bent with foot against my leg, arms up in the air, and looking upwards while going up on my toes. emoticon Still, I did better than I expected.

The class ended with us back in our chairs, doing breathing exercises, a little meditation, and connecting with how we felt. I walked away feeling relieved, proud, relaxed, and calm. I enjoyed the class very much and plan to make it a regular part of my week. It meets on Mondays and Fridays.

So once again I have to commend the Azure leaders for encouraging me to do something I didn't feel comfortable doing but learned that it is something I expect to very much enjoy. emoticon

That's great that you tried something new and liked it too.

I am not very good at yoga and have never thought of going to a class but maybe I should look into it and see if they have a class like you went to. I just imagine a lot of younger girls that can twist and turn all ways and there I'd be crawling to the wall to help myself get up off the ground!

I wish there was a water aerobics class offered around here at a time that I could go to it. That is something I'd really enjoy.

Keep trying new things! emoticon emoticon

I've not done a yoga class but I'd like to try it. It seems so intimidating and it doesn't help knowing that I am so inflexible. But I agree this BLC25 has made me do a few things that I'd not normally do. It's demanding but I'm enjoying it. Great on you.

    Susan,
that is so cool that you choose to try Yoga, I too belong to Silver Sneakers and I love Yoga, I have tried it at 3 different gyms and they were all a bit different, but it does feel so good, when you come away from the class being relaxed and knowing you can do it. Bravo to you for doing the class and for deciding to continue with it. emoticon

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I love taking yoga classes, but I haven't been able to do so in awhile--our yoga teacher here is really good about helping you with variations if you can't do the full pose so you still receive the benefit. My balance isn't very good though, so I always try to get a spot near a wall.

That's so COOL, Susan!!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I don't know what to do for my "out of my comfort zone" activity - have any suggestions? I can't join you on the yoga because I already do that. ;-)

Yes, going outside our comfort zone can make us realize we can do more and enjoy things that in the past we just avoided. I started taking a senior Zumba class two weeks ago. Am enjoy it. Let us continue to be open to new opportunities to explore and grow. emoticon
