One of our challenges on Azures this week is to try something new out of our comfort zone. For me, I went way out of my comfort zone today. I am not a yoga person. I'm not good at it and never imagined I'd try a gym class in it. An activity I do love is water aerobics. One of my friends in the class has been asking me to try a yoga class that takes place 30 minutes after our water aerobics class, so this was the perfect week to try it since I can get points for it.
Another lady in our class also kept encouraging me, saying I would enjoy it. Aside from getting points, I felt more comfortable because it was a Silver Sneakers program so I felt I'd be able to at least participate without being too far behind the class. I hoped that it wouldn't be too much after my first class, but hey … there were points available.
Unfortunately, neither lady from water aerobics could make the yoga class today but I went anyway.
There were about 20 ladies in the class, ranging in age from 40 to maybe mid-60's. I was talking to the lady next to me and when she heard I was new she gave me a quick lesson in things that would help me. The instructor also noticed I was new, introduced herself, and told me to do what I could, don't worry if I couldn't do all of it, and to be near a chair in case I needed to catch my balance.
The class started with low lights, soft music, and breathing exercises … while sitting on a chair. Okay, I was feeling pretty good about that.
The instructor was encouraging us to get in touch with our inner self and think about how our bodies felt. From here, she started warming up our different parts, starting with arms, legs, and then core … while still seated. I was still feeling pretty good.
We then stood up and did 4 variations of the warrior pose. I liked them, and I felt right in there with the rest of the class. We did a tree pose, which I did fairly well. I won't remember all the poses, but really the only problem I had was a little bit of balance issue while standing on one leg, the other bent with foot against my leg, arms up in the air, and looking upwards while going up on my toes.
Still, I did better than I expected.
The class ended with us back in our chairs, doing breathing exercises, a little meditation, and connecting with how we felt. I walked away feeling relieved, proud, relaxed, and calm. I enjoyed the class very much and plan to make it a regular part of my week. It meets on Mondays and Fridays.
So once again I have to commend the Azure leaders for encouraging me to do something I didn't feel comfortable doing but learned that it is something I expect to very much enjoy.
