What motivates me to stay committed to a healthy lifestyle

Sunday, June 08, 2014

One of our challenges this weekend on Azure is to write a blog and we were given a list of possible choices. I chose this one because it is something I think about daily. What motivates me to say committed to a healthy lifestyle?

Health – This is by far my biggest motivation. When I retired from a stressful career a few years ago, I was not in good health. In fact one of the reasons I retired is my doctor basically told me to leave my job or die at my desk. My biggest issue was dangerously high blood pressure. I also had diabetes and wasn't doing a good job of consistently controlling it. I was overweight (240 when I retired) and didn't have much energy. I had terrible sleep problems, often getting only 2-3 hours of fretful sleep a night. Today, I am in the mid-170's. I have been lower in the last year but didn't maintain that when we traveled extensively. Since getting back to the BLC at the end of April, I have lost about 9 pounds and feel very committed to continuing the losses. I exercise from 60 to over 120 minutes a day, eat tasty and healthy food, and on most days have a lot of energy. My sleep habits are greatly improved, with only about 2 days a month where I don't get 7 hours of sleep or more. My diabetes is under good control and my blood pressure is typically in the 115/70 area. I feel great.

Family – My husband joined me in the fight last year. He was in bad shape and has improved greatly since then. Neither of us want to go back to where we were, and neither of us want to let the other down. We love the way we are eating and exercising now, and if anything want to up our game. I love seeing how much better my husband is feeling and I want to encourage that by continuing the healthy lifestyle. I also want to be in good shape to be around for my son and his future children. I remember all the great times I had with my dad's parents and I want to do the same for my own grandchildren when the time comes.

Energy – I want to have the energy to exercise daily, travel and not be held back from enjoying it, and to feel up to any task. I feel happy when I have energy. These days that is my norm, so when it slides I work hard to get it back to where it was.

Challenges – I am very motivated by challenges and meeting goals. That is one reason I enjoy the BLC so much. If I set a goal, I usually do it. If I can get points for it, I definitely do it. emoticon For me, it is fun and makes me happy.

Lovely blog, Susan. You've inspired me to rethink my own lifestyle. I have been struggling mightily. I wish my DH would join me on this journey, but alas, it is not to be. I love following you, though, and I am so glad that you were able to get a handle on your lifestyle.

Love this! Yeah, so often our health suffers in the job environment--we put ourselves on the back burner, and our health suffers. But I'm so glad to see how you and your husband have turned that around--while enjoying life together! That's awesome.

This is one of the reasons that the BLC is so great, IMHO - it presents fun challenges that help us to have fun and success! And you've been SUCH an inspiration - you've done so well with all of this, and helped to nudge me along, too! emoticon

Susan- your blog was such an inspiration to the what can happen when you set your mind to your getting yourself in shape. When you start putting yourself as a priority in life and realize that if you don't get it together now then you aren't going to be around for the ones who love you and you have that special one who joined you in your fight for health that is a treasure in itself. I am rambling on but I just want to say that I am a better person for having met you and you inspire me daily thank you.

Susan, Congrat's on getting so fit and healthy since retiring.
Its always encouraging to see someone get their Diabetes under control and BP.
Having read your blog, I need to get my DH back into the gym.
He has a bad back and hip, so walking isn't the best thing, but we do it on occasion.
Keep those joints lubricated with movement.
We belong to Silver sneakers, and the one gym closed and the other one is a bit away. We have a new one coming Next June, so It will be about 5 miles away, YMCA. I can't wait. in the mean time we have a very small one 4 miles the other direction and it has equipment he can use, emoticon and so Thx for the idea, time to motivate a workout buddy and get him going with me.
