I Bought $30 of Yarn to Knit Myself a $10 Hat

Monday, February 17, 2014

This weekend I have actually been doing a lot of knitting. Watching old movies and knitting. I saw some old Elizabeth Taylor classics, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with Paul Newman and "A Place in the Sun" with Montgomery Clift.

Here is the result of my Saturday evening:

Accompanying this image is a knitter's joke. Well, not so much a joke as a true story.

At the beginning of winter I saw a really cute neon hat in a "fashion" store for $10. I wanted to buy it, but thought, "I'm not buying a hat like that when I can knit one myself." So, the next time I went to the yarn store I bought yarn to knit a neon hat -- $30 worth! Yup! Creative people do not make their own clothes to save money, that's for sure.

    I TOTALLY get your joke!

I have a blanket around here that cost my more than $100, when all was said and done.

So, you're a classic movie buff AND a knitter, huh? Guess I'll be heading over to friend you now :)

AH!! And you self-identify as Slytherin?? ('Just noticed the background.) I don't know anyone besides me who does that. Now I'm going to have to come back and dig through your whole page.

(I'm here because it's my turn to check in on all the Writers Team blogs. Nice to meet you :))

The $30 buys the hat, the skill, the fun, and the time spent.

Plus I bet you've got leftover yarn. My mother used to put it all together, all the odds and ends and make sweaters from it at times.

    Mine was a dorky childhood.

You my have spent $30 but think of the amount of fun you had for $30. From picking out the colors, planning out the hat, casting on the stitches, the actual knitting. And now the wearing of the hat. Yeah the other one was less money but you got a lot of FUN for your $30 and a real sense of accomplishment. Plus it's cute to boot! And the colors are emoticon

Hey that's not bad, at least you finished it! I have tons of expensive yarn stashes with half or almost finished poncho's, sweaters, blankets, etc. This Spring I want to finish my last year's poncho! emoticon

I've found that with crafty stuff. It may be unique but it is frequently not cheap.
