What do I want Maintenance to Look Like?

Saturday, February 15, 2014

When I am "done" with weight loss and ready to maintain, how do I want that to look? My brainstorm:

emoticon I don't want to be as focused on food and SP as I am now; I can't sustain this level of focus forever; see below for what I think I still need to be doing
emoticon I will be exercising still daily; I would really like to continue the 10 minutes of exercise a day forever - the best "spark" tool from the Sparkguy ever
emoticon I still think I will need to track food, though perhaps not every day; I would like to be able to "eyeball" portions and choose the right combination of food groups without worrying about it and still be able to maintain; I'm not sure how doable this will be; for now I will say that I will still need to track food most days of the week
emoticon I'd like to have a "day off" 1 day a week plus maybe a couple of other meals (currently I have a whole day off and 1 meal off)
emoticon I'd like to be exercising at least 30 minutes at a time 3-4 days a week
emoticon I'd like to be able to get back in control quickly if I start down a bad road; like within a week; I will need a plan for this
emoticon Weigh in once a week and stay within 3 pounds of my maintenance goal

So, I'm actually wondering if I should "practice" maintenance, to ensure I am comfortable with the behaviors, during my weight loss period. Like for example, perhaps after 20 pounds lost, do maintenance for a month and see how it feel (can I do this forever?), then go back to weight loss.

Hmmm... food for thought.

    hey!!

I think that maintenance probably is our bigger challenge!! Reaching a goal or even coming NEAR our goal weights sometimes makes us feel like we've just been released from prison! A new kinda freedom sets in, a new thought process that NOW i can afford to eat this and drink that! And thats where we go wrong! So yes, Its awesome to have a plan chalked out for maintenence!! Kudos to you for your great insight about this and for your plan which sounds rather complete and appropriate!

I agree that we often practice maintenance when we hit those annoying plateaus! But I'd like to believe that maintenance will be an easier phase than a plateau phase!

You will learn about maintenance when you hit a plateau, trust me LOL! I have been on unvoluntary maintenance 3 or 4 times on this journey, where the scale refuses to budge. ;) But it sounds like your maintenance goals are great!! :D emoticon
