My Sister's Emergency Surgery
Sunday, January 26, 2014
I was notified at work that my sister was having emergency surgery and I needed to get to the hospital right away. She has diverticulitus and gets annual colonoscopies. Her next one was scheduled for Monday morning. Last night, it burst and filled her abdominal cavity. It was touch and go for a while. She had surgery at 3 am and her bp was 50 over something most of the day. Around 6 pm, it rose to 90 over something, and at 9 pm it finally rose to 121/61 which is back to normal. Her pain meds were interfering with her bp so they lowered them. They had to give her IVs of potassium, magnesium, and one other nutrient. She will be there for at least a week because she can have no food or liquids for a week. Just IVs. They thought she might need to go back into surgery but tonight gave her an 80% chance that they were successful with the first surgery(repair and flush of her abdominal cavity). I took the next four days off to stay at the hospital with her. Just needed to write it out that she made huge improvements tonight.
