Non Scale Victories, key to being healthy

Wednesday, November 06, 2013

A new Spark Friend of mine shared a picture of herself in a new pretty dress in a smaller size as a non scale victory, NSV, and she looks great. A guy friend from a Spark Team recently posted some pictures of what the exercise has done to his body and the definition is amazing! Again a super NSV. It is starting to sink into my thick skull that it may be the visible steps to health that may or may not show up on the scale that will make this a lifestyle change for me.
One of my non weight related goals is to be able to purchase pants in any store in America that carries men's clothing. If I had to put a number to that goal then I need to wear a size 38 or 40 jean. This time when I began this journey my jeans were a size 54 and getting tight. Now at 50 pounds down my size 48 jeans are starting to hang and I've got some 46 that I can put on but are just a pinch too tight. My work shirts that were a bit snug now hang on me like a bag. This morning on a lark I put on a jacket that I purchased 10 years ago that did not fit even then, and now I can easily zip it up and cross my arms comfortably in this garment.
On the fitness side of things I can now walk the entire length of my building and not be out of breath. In fact I can go from one end of my campus to the other and not have to stop or feel like I'm going to pass out. Seeing the computer guy passed out in the hall would not impress the teachers or students. On Friday nights I can carry my broadcast gear up the bleachers to the pressbox and not be panting and faint. My teen Son even commented the other day on my fitness, "nice guns Daddy". It may be time to change my profile picture where I'm sitting at the console in a radio studio. I'm about 12 pounds lighter and neither that shirt or pants come close to fitting now.
Yes smaller scale numbers are fun and great, but honestly it is the NSV along the way that is keeping me on track longer than in the past. Do you have any that you wish to celebrate? Hey, I'll celebrate them with you, I do not care how silly!!! I may find your NSV even more motivation than my own. We can do this!

I love this term, NSV, and appreciate it's meaning. I can't name one right at the moment, but kinda thinking of certain garments in my closet that would do a happy dance - No - will do a happy dance - when I can put them on again without holding my breath. Oh, and then zip them up, too. emoticon

Waaay to go with the jacket! You ROCK!

Clothes are such a great sign of NSV's. And I like your goal of being able to buy pants in any store. The funny thing for me is that I am down to a size 32 waist and believe it or not, I have a hard time finding THEM in stores! OH well, a nice problem to have...

Excellent job! emoticon It's so easy to get overly focused on the number on the scale and lose track of what is important. I know I get distracted on the number of the scale, but who else knows my weight? We don't walk around with our weight stamped to our forehead, but it is obvious to everyone when our clothes start getting baggy and we aren't out of breath.

I am so proud of you and your accomplishments! I have clothes from years back that I'm hanging on to because I just KNOW that someday I'll be able to wear them again. I currently don't have any new NSV's to share. I already shared mine w/you a couple months ago when I got down to a smaller size. :) the compliments and kind comments from others are nice too... but it's been a while since. I've been the same weight for a couple months now... actually, I've gained a little bit in October. :( Time to reel it in and get back to the losing. :)

You keep doing what you are doing because it works!!! And I'd love to see some new pics! :)

Steve - Your closet must look like mine! I keep all of my old clothes too! I still have a pair of pants from 23 years back. A lifetime NSV is to sport them once again (they are still too tight around my waste - LOL misspelling actually applies)!
My best NSV is replacing and erasing 30+ years of smoking damage (almost three years smoke free) with fitness and nutrition. An ever bigger win, sharing this journey with my DH, he has totally embraced the healthy lifestyle also and is two years out since his heart attack - the trigger to start our Spark journey. I am so proud of him for all the changes he has made. We are so grateful for each healthy day we share. You are doing amazing on your Spark Journey! My son is currently having a hard time keeping up with his six year old son because of a shortness of breath. Breaks my heart. He is working on it so - Woo Hoo! I am so elated for you to be increasing your lung capacity. That is huge, super win from the fitness you've been doing lately. Go Chiefs! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love your NSV's. Can't wait to see the latest picture of you either. I think you're doing great!! My all time favorite NSV is that I can breath better now. And, of course I love it when others notice that I have lost weight, that is super cool. Keep up the good work.
