My 7 point Weight Watcher's Points Plus breakfast

Tuesday, July 09, 2013

Hello folks. Just wanted to share my excitement in trying this new approach (for me) in using WW instead of my former method of just counting calories. I've had a successful two weeks so far, I lost 6 pounds last week, and 8.6 pounds this week. This new way works!

My former method of just counting calories alone was not working for me. I think it's because all unknowingly I was drifting into eating too many carbs under that method. In my mind I figured that as long as I stayed under a certain amount of calories that I would lose weight. Calories are calories are calories, right? Or so I thought. However, the weight wasn't coming off except in very slow trickles. Much too slowly for a person of my size. And of course when that would happen, as it did in almost every other "dieting" attempt I've made in the last few years, I would lose heart and give up. I felt I was doomed to be fat for the rest of my life. That's the state of mind I was in for much of last year and this one as well. I had given up. Then I saw a few posts from a woman on FB who had lost 250 pounds in 3 years using the WW system. I started researching WW, and while doing so, I stumbled across an account of yet another woman who had lost 300 pounds doing the WW system. Both were older women, close to 50 years of age when they attempted their remarkable weight loss journeys. Now that really piqued my interest! I felt hope stirring in me again. I decided to give it a try.

On the very first day, while planning my meals I was surprised to learn that under the WW system, if I eat too many carbs I would quickly find that I've used up my daily allotted points before the middle of the day...even though the calorie count was UNDER my former set limit of calories. Hmmm, that was eye opening. No wonder I wasn't losing before! Eating the way I used to obviously wasn't going to work , so right away I was nudged into finding less carb-dense foods (less points) and guided into eating healthier choices. And, so far, it's worked wonderfully. Yes, I do know that 2 weeks is early days yet, but I truly feel that this is something I can live with for the long haul. There are a lot of food options out there that keep me full and happy.

I posted this photo of what I had for breakfast to give you an idea of the kind of foods I can enjoy on this plan. (1/2 cup egg beaters, 2 turkey link sausages, 2 Nutri Grain low fat waffles with sugar free syrup, I can't believe it's not butter spray, and a banana). It's a lot of food and I leave the table fully satisfied. I can tell you that wasn't the case under my former counting calorie method.

So. there it is. Just had to share, and wanted to spread the spark to anyone who, like me, has given up or is faltering along the way. My message to you is to try something different! If what you're doing isn't working, then change direction! There isn't always one, set way to approach something. And most of all--reach out for help. Don't try to do it alone. There's always a way to master a thing. Find the right path for you and go for it!

Dear Sis (from another Ma) I joined W.W. in February, not my first trip on the coaster. This time I was the moral support for a friend just ending a liquid diet. The first months I just showed up at the meetings. Then a bit ago for some reason I decided that I would track my points. Ok. I'm still hanging on, flirting with 20#. My friend, exactly where she signed on, happy maintaining what she had lost on the liquid. And now I';m adding toaster waffles to my shoppee list. emoticon J

I've been toying with trying WW. I appreciate your blog so much. I'm starting to think I need to face someone at a weigh in session to get me back in running gear. I have been playing with the same nasty 5 pounds for way too long than I like to think about. I have a long journey ahead of me as well. Thanks for a great blog!

It's great that you're finding something that makes it all work for you! I'm betting that after a few months on the plan you'll be totalling the points subconsciously and won't even have to think much about it.

I stick to a basic low carb plan and don't count calories much at all, but do count carbs. They add up quick and drive your hunger and cravings! Most people find that the lower in carbs they go the less hunger they have because their blood sugar stays rock steady.

    Good going!!

I still have a weight watchers book from years ago that i still use. You are so right. they also have you eat according to how much you weigh so that you arent eating the same as someone who is looking to lose 10 pounds. I didnt do well with the having to go in and get weighed but i still eat the recipes i got from them.

Georgia, glad you found something that has you motivated again, did you join weight watchers? If so what is the cost? If not how did you find out the info on the points system? Thanks for any enlightenment you can give.
