Fun in the Snow

Saturday, February 09, 2013

So, one thing that's really great about all the snow that fell yesterday in this big winter storm is that we had fresh deep snow to go snow shoeing this morning. We got up and out early -- which is a good thing, because in the morning it was still cold enough for the snow to stay soft and fluffy. As the afternoon sun warmed the air, the snow became denser and a little sticky, which is less ideal for snow shoeing.

I was watching the coverage of the storm last night on CNN, and like many people who have lived with winter weather all their lives, I wondered how this snowfall could be newsworthy. Some parts of the US and Canada got hit harder than others, I guess. Extended power outages would have made the storm more hazardous, of course. But now, after a day of sunshine and with the streets all plowed, it's even harder to imagine the snow as "dangerous".

I am so glad we had this chance to go snow shoeing again. I now use poles when I snow shoe. I find it gives me a bit of extra confidence, especially on the downward slopes. I was rejoicing in the strength of my legs to carry me across the snow, and the endurance I had to not get winded from the exertion. I am thankful for healthy living, losing weight, and gaining fitness so I can enjoy activities that I would have avoided just a short time ago.

I haven't quite lost 50 pounds yet, but I only have a couple of pounds to go. And it's amazing the difference it makes!
