Yesterday I ran my first HM in SC.
A VERY HILLY run. But since I have lived here (2 months) all my long runs have been hilly runs. This was a local run put on by the YMCA. When the race started I wasn't planning on a PR - I just wanted to run a HM. I soon found out that the out and back course was uphill all directions or at least that is how it felt. I have been practicing with only using gatorade and water as fuel and it worked. I didn't cramp up. The weather was perfect for me - 60 and overcast. I had nothing to prove to anyone so I was taking my time but couldn't get over how fast it seemed everyone was coming past me. The route was gorgeous. My family was there and the girls even ran a bit with me - so cute. Crowd support was far and few between but I think there were under 200 runners. The race was put on really well and there were plenty of water/gatorade stations.
The final portion of the race is a lap around the HS track. I saw the clock and couldn't believe it - 2:17:58 so waited to get the official results and sure enough - 2:17:52!! A new PR for a Hilly Course. My last hilly HM was in PA and I ran it in 2:24:29. So there you have it - train on hills and you will eventually conquer them!
