Difficult days.

Friday, November 16, 2012

My beloved assistance dog, Meka, is having a difficult time right now.

On Sunday, he was unable to stand up when it was time to get his breakfast. Finally after several hours we were able to get him standing and walking, though not well, but enough to get him to the Vet.

After x rays, of his legs and hips it was noted that his arthritis was now affecting the hock of his right rear leg and seemed quite severe. He was given anti-inflammatory medication by injection and the dosage of his oral medication was increased. He was also given something for pain.

He improved a bit that afternoon and night.

However, the next day he once again could not stand and this time no amount of cajoiing or assistance from us could get him to his feet. We dug our Radio Flyer wagon out of the closet and brought him to the vet after calling to let them know we were on the way.

After blood work and more x rays, it was determined that he has a spinal lesion, likely a ruptured disk. He was given a steroid injection and a course of oral prednisone was prescribed to follow up at home.

We were given the option of having him hospitalized overnight, but that would have necessitated his going to another location, since there is no overnight staff at our vet's facility. We opted instead to take him home for the night and return him in the morning so that they could observe him through the day and give him fluids if he continued not to wish to eat and drink, as he had that day.

During that next day of observation, he did begin to eat, but not to drink, so fluids were administered, as was the medication that had been prescribed.

He was home Wednesday and today. He has been eating and drinking water; seems somewhat more alert and more cheerful but he still can't stand up. We've got him set up on the floor next to our bed and we're mostly hanging out there with him.

We'll be having another talk with the Vet tomorrow.

Thanks to all of you who've left such kind comments!

Meka is going on13 years old and he's been my assistance dog since he was about 2 yrs. old, so we have a lot of history, especially in dog years. emoticon

We're on the third full day of medication. He's has some minor improvement in appetite, alertness and mood, which makes me thinks he might be in less pain than before, but he still hasn't been able to stand up. I'm hoping for a more dramatic improvement soon.

    Thanks again.

Meka is such an unusual name. That is what caught my attention, since I named a Sheltie that back in the 1980s!

Blessings your way, hoping Meka rallies. Such a tough time.
