So this weekend I completed a 5K... I had signed up months ago in an effort to force myself to train and get in shape. Well, let me tell you, I ignored myself and didn't train one bit... so I spent the entire race with my lungs feeling like they were going to explode. I watched in dismay as people of all shapes, sizes, and ages passed me by while I gasped for breath and tried to discreetly adjust the terrible underwear I had worn.
That being said, in spite of my lackluster time, I still got a trophy for second place women's team... which was sad in itself because only two all women's teams registered... but it wasn't too sad, because really...who doesn't like to get trophies?
In any case, this weekend's 5K race inspired me to make a change. Yesterday, I decided to buy new running shoes, special running socks, a running hat (not really sure why I needed this one), a running belt to hold my keys and pepper spray (to ward off hostile bears), and a mobile app to train with. Today, I used said purchases and completed Day 1 of my 8 week training program. I'm off to a pretty solid start and identified another pair of underwear as unacceptable for running. (Seriously, whoever designed my underwear certainly didn't go jogging in them... and if they did, they have a sick sense of humor.)
In addition to prompting me to spend a lot of money, the 5k granted me a renewed sense of purpose... for my next 5K, I vow to not embarrass myself (this includes both wearing better underwear and being in better shape)!!
