March Challenge Update......

All is well here!! I am doing very well with my runs and my workouts. I really hope to press hard the next couple of days before we leave for Kayla's birthday trip!! I still cannot believe she is about to be 2. I am so overwhelmed with emotion at times just thinking about how fast everything is going. It really does feel like yesterday I was blogging on here about my pregnancy workouts. I love this time with her though as she is so fun to watch as she explores the world around her in a very special way!


After Saturday's long run, I was down a bit but I feel better now. My calf is still hurting.....strange as I took yesterday off. I talked with my aunt....the elite runner and physician and I am not to do any hills for 1-2 weeks. I am hoping it will help. I am concerned though on one thing. It is a girl thing.....heels! I have all my boots ready for our trip and I was thinking how it is going to be hard on my calf when I am walking around all day on cobblestones in high boots, then taking off to run in the evenings. Not sure what I am going to do as of yet. I think for Disneyland Paris I will wear my running shoes as that will be the most walking we will do. The other cities around Europe will be via trains and we are renting a car for part of the Alscae region and Switzerland. I just do not want to mess my calf up any further...........for those wondering what on earth I am talking about, on Saturday I had to stop at 11 miles as my right calf cramped up BAD and I could not even walk for a bit after. Then I stretched it out and walked another 5.25 miles and it seemed better but it is still very tight. I have been doing a great amount of hill work........running on toes......and I think it may be a strain. But my AP for the run was 10:11......I was happy with this but I wanted to keep running! Cardio wise I was blazing even at mile 11. It was frustrating but I just hope my calf is ok! So it is FLAT running for me for the next few weeks. Not sure how this will workout as we are going to the Alps! :) I may need to just walk and pick up my long runs when we get back and I can run along the water where it is flat. I do think I can get some good runs in while in Paris as it is pretty flat there. It will be fun to see where I can run throughout our trip!

Back to the vacation and my goals.......

As much as I love traveling, I have learned how important it is to have a plan and to set goals prior to leaving. There are so many amazing treats that one could easily lose control and come back far off track. So, I am setting goals and trying to keep my marathon training on track while we are gone.

We are going to a region of Europe with GOOD food......and I do mean GOOD!! I am a bread NUT and I go crazy for cheese so I am going to have to really watch it when we are in France or I am just going to have to get out there and run daily :) Goat cheese is my weakness....not chocolate, not hamburgers.......goat and feta cheese! Mouth is watering now......

So, I will be posting my totals this week before we leave and I hope to meet my push up goal by the first of April......then a new challenge begins!!!! I am going for 120 miles the month of April and probably another 2,000 pushups.......maybe a few more goals as well.

    Enjoy your trip, it will be fantastic for sure! Next time you can come and visit me, I live in Dolomites (South Tyrol) Italy! It is not far away from Switzerland! Looking forward to hear about your impressions!

    I hope your calf (calve?) is feeling better soon. I have had that kind of injury. You might try one of those epsom salt baths if you have a tub available. Kiss your baby for me! I can't believe she is 2 either! Where did the time go?

    Have an amazing trip and good luck on your goals. Hubby and I are finally going to New York for almost 2 weeks, so excited, but also scared about staying on track. We have been planning this trip for about 7 years :o) and we leave on April 25th :)

    The magnesium sounds like a really great idea. I have to take that or I cramp up and the epsom salts in a bath-very smart thing to do.
    As for heels-I understand you. I am 50-I will be 51 in May and I always wear heels when appropriate. I love them and I don't think I will ever get too old for them....but for now you really have to proritize and it would be best to wear flats for most of the trip as you know!
    Have a great time and yes the years go by fast. I have 4 kids and they are ages 14,16,18 and 20-I love spending time with them but I really treasured the time I spent with them when they were but wee ones! Sounds like you are having many specail times with your little DD emoticon

    when ever you take vitamin D or calcium you should also make sure you get enough magnesium.They work together! Its the magnesium that relaxes muscles! But make sure to take it at night if you take the Glycinated powder magnesium, for it takes 12 hours to go thru your system and best taken at night while you sleep. It will relax your muscles and your bowels! But does get rid of sore muscles! It even helps anxiety too! You can get sufficient magnesium by eating two to three apples in the afternoon. (I juice mine) You cna also soak in a magnesium bath soaps. Does wonders for two hours of relief!

    I suppose you are getting sufficient Calcium and other minerals. I know when I had cramps, that my doctor prescribed a Ca supplement and the cramps miraculously went away.

    Flats, all the way! I haven't worn heels in years. Find some stylish flats and embrace it! I particularly like flats from the store Geox. They are really comfortable in addition to being stylish.

    It might be best to stick to flats for a little while. At least make sure you pack a few just in case the heels hurt your calves to much. Sounds like your trip will be a blast.

    Wow! You are on fire! Sounds like you have an awesome vacation planned and a plan in mind. Take it easy on your running so you don't do any permanent or long-term injury. That is the worst! Hope you will share pics of your awesome vacation!

    We went to the Alps last summer and I sure had some amazingly hilly runs- that said, there are definitely flat places- even in the Alps that you can conquer. We actually stayed on a top of a mountain, so the funnest part was going down hill, running through the woods (it was like a park system with the most beautiful Alpine water ever) and of course tackling the hill, but we could have just stayed down there and ran pretty flat- I am sure you'll find a suitable option!
    As for the food- I just eat whatever I want, but don't overdo it. Since we are always active on vacation and my body is relaxed, I actually loose weight. ( the problem is I only tend ot loose weight while on vacation-lol) Life's too short to not enjoy a little bit of French cuisine, ces't ne pas?

    Yes take care of your legs, and knees too or you may have to sideline longer than you want. I lived in Germany, Belguim and France when I was a child and it is so beautiful. I loved Austria and the Alps the most.
    Hey any new pics of miss Kayla!? Thomas was 2 in Jan but isn't talking much and my dd is saying wonders if he is autistic a bit, but his father my son says no he just doesn't want to talk but can. So hoping all will be well, and if he needs help gets it sooner than later!

    Sounds like good advice from your aunt! I always HATE to stop running when I feel the slightest knee pain but I know if I really injure it, it will stop me completely for a LONG time and might derail my running goals forever. I try and keep that in mind when I'm struggling in my head (during a run) with: slowing down and walking a bit or pushing through it. Same may go for your calf issues. Beware of any and all overuse injuries!! Trip sounds like so much fun!! Post photos!!
