How have you overcome your food addiction?

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Hello sparkpeople!

I haven't been able to blog in quite some time. You see, a combination of work, home life, family, and holidays kept me from updating my spark page.

To catch you up - I lost 30 pounds last year, but failed to run a 5k like I had hoped. I was lucky to lose what I lost and still make it to the gym at least once a week. I just wasn't prepared for how hectic life would get.

This weight loss battle that I'm on has come with many obstacles but my hardest obstacle is food. When I am forced to work ridiculous hours at work, my company will usually buy breakfast, lunch or dinner (depending on the hour). These company sponsored meals include Chinese food, pizza, fast food, cake, bagels, donuts.... you get the picture. It's difficult to find something healthy with those options and it's even more of a challenge to choose a healthy option over the delicious unhealthy options.

Everyday is a struggle for me and everyday I continue to work at changing my eating habits.

I became a vegetarian a year a half ago because I knew that would keep me away from most fast food restaurants. I used to be a fast food junkie. I would eat McDonalds at least 4 times a week and some days I would go through the drive-thru for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's amazing that I'm still here to tell my tale. Eliminating meat from my diet did cure my fast food addiction but I still have other food demons that I am struggling with everyday.

To help with my obstacles, I have paid for a personal trainer. I hope that, with his help, I will be able to make better decisions when it comes to food.

A question for anyone reading - How have you overcome your food addiction?

I haven't been when you find out let me know..LOL.. I think that food will always be a never ending struggle or battle for me. It's hard & I know I never want to be a vegan. I need help with portion control. I seem to over-do it at time with my meals & need to learn to balance my meals.

    Best luck to you!

I became vegan and I eat clean. I have found that since I no longer eat junk, I don't crave it.

I also agree with Kelly. Replacing the unhealthy food with a healthy choice is a good plan too. I still eat pizza but it's a much lighter meal and I don't feel sick afterwards.

CONGRATS on your progress! You can do this :)

Replacing it with another habit. Once a craving hit, drink a lot of water and find something to distract your mind, like going for a walk or put in a cardio DVD to get through the temptation.

Good to see you blogging again.

    Answer - I haven't!

"stress-eating" is proving my biggest downfall (work related), followed by lack of organisation, followed by a simple love of carbs!

I think all we can do is work on the moderation side of things. I have read in many places that cutting out a whole food group will just make you want it more. Moderation is the key.

If you would like to discuss this further please feel free to drop me a sparkmail - maybe we can conquer our issues together! :)
