Goal Modification, Rewards, Leverage and Good Things
Monday, January 09, 2012
This blog is kind of a smattering of things that have been floating in my head for the past few weeks or so. Time to let them free!
One of the key parts to making goals is making them reasonable. At the end of 2011 I made some weight loss goals, using some assumptions about my weight etc. Well now that 2012 is here I have modified my goals. It is hard because I am losing water weight (Saturday I weighed 228.8, Sunday I weighed 223.6, Monday I weighed in at 218.8). I don't want to set myself up for failure, but I don't want to have lax goals either, so this is what i am going to go with:
4-11-2012 weight goal- 199 pounds
7-1-2012 wight goal -180 pounds
I also have most of a reward system up for weight loss, working out, eating right, improving my running speed, shrinking (based on pant size), not biting my nails, and doing pushups. Most of the rewards are simple thing (spark goodies) but some good milestones have appropriate rewards (clothes, workout gear). When i hit my goals I'll post what I've given myself to help keep me accountable.
This is something I have been reading about that is really hard for me. It is a tactic to keep a person focused. Normal leverage is if I do X then I get Y. Reverse leverage is if I don't do X then I lose Y. It is suppose to be scary enough that you will not fail, and serious enough that you cannot back out and not do it.. Many people use money (usually several thousand dollars that a friend holds if you fail the money goes to charity if you achieve it comes back to you). After thinking about it I think I will use pictures. If I don't reach my 199 pounds by April 11th 2012, I will post my before pictures here on spark and put them up in my office at work. EEP! So scary. I don't like failing so posting my failure is SCARY! So I best get my butt in gear! Note- this is also my first time taking before photos ever!
On to good things (like this blog wasn't long enough):
Some background. DH just finished is associates in August of 2011. He then had his internship (followed by an extension of his contract), but after that the group he was in didn't need anymore people so he was let go. Thankfully we can survive on my income alone-things just get tight!
Late in 2011 DH and I were going to drive down to Florida for Christmas with my mom on Thursday the 22nd, then spend the first week of January in DISNEY WORLD. We paid for the trip before DH lost his contract so we were set (already had ticket etc). On Monday the 19th DH gets called for an interview. On Tuesday the 20th they offer him a job. They wanted him to start on the 2nd of Jan, but we were going to be out of town. They were willing to push his start day back to the 16th. So the Wednesday before we leave he does in for his drug tests and Thursday morning at around 430 we hit the road.
EHHHH! So exciting. Talk about a great Christmas gift! Good timing too! By the time we got to Florida we had broken the sway bar on the car and all four struts needed to be replaced, and the front break pads were toasted (so we spent the first few days after Christmas getting the car fixed-fun fun!). Old cars are so fun!
A good Christmas was had by all, and Disney was a BLAST!
