Talk about some weird news...

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

For several years now I have suffered from stomach and bowel issues, and always just assumed it was something I couldn't do anything about. I had never really worried too much about it, since my symptoms are annoying but don't prevent me from living normally. But last week I finally decided to find out what was happening. I went to a natural clinic and after some blood tests they determined I have a really rare food intolerance... to FRUIT! I was floored. Not only floored, but completely discouraged: with my vegan diet, how on earth am I supposed to eliminate FRUIT???

Not only am I intolerant to all the basic fruits, I also must now avoid wine (!!!); vinegar, citric acid and ascorbic acid (which are found in almost every processed food out there, including condiments); avocado; and even olives and olive oil. Even cashews are a fruit since they apparently grow on a tropical fruit tree! So now I am down to only eating grains, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. At least I can still drink beer!

The doctor did say that the intolerance may go away if I fix the problem, so I am also taking supplements to help improve my digestion. They want to re-test in 6 months; that is a LONG TIME to avoid all fruits! At this point I am going to try it for a while and see how it goes. I suppose it will help me get back to really reading labels and tracking my food. I really hope the benefits outweigh the drawbacks!

The interesting question would be: do you have to avoid all botanical fruits or just sweet things. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are technically fruits, but we always think of them in their savory/ vegetable context. (Sorry for the repetition, I just noticed that DiveGoddess posted essentially the same thing.)

FWIW/ Note to the masses: A fruit is anything that is an enlarged plant ovary. Basically, if there are seeds on the inside, its a fruit.

Good luck! I admire anyone with the know-how to be a vegan.

I think the hardest part would be having to read all the labels since it's easy to identify a fruit, but harder to know about the processed foods. This will extend to HOW items are prepared if you go out to eat. Lots of places uses olive oil in their cooking and dressings. Good Luck!

Wow. I've never heard of a fruit intolerance. Does that include tomatos, eggplants and peppers? Because those are botanically considered fruits. What is in the fruit that you are actually intolerant to?

Oh man, that really sucks! I don't think I would get through a day without fruit, I eat so much of it.

Hope this works out for you and you get to enjoy life without feeling awful once you've cut out the bad stuff, and that you find some good stuff to replace it.
