30 Days to Greater Happiness - November 4 and 5

Saturday, November 05, 2011

So I missed yesterday's entry thanks to work insanity. But I am taking my "10 minutes for Tina" today to catch up on my Spark world..so I'll cover both days today.

Yesterday, Spark told us to:

Take action. If you
don't like your job
or other life
circumstances, make a
plan and take charge.
You create of your own
reality, and you can
change your life if you're
unhappy. Start today!

Interesting, I didn't read this yesterday. And despite my best intentions to make strides forward, I always seem to be slipping backwards. I did get in some exercise yesterday, and I started the day out great with my eating, but after picking up my DS from school and having to go shopping for a birthday present for a party this weekend, I came home, typically overwhelmed with too much to do and no time to do it, and I ate, ate, ate. I ate despite the fact that I knew we were going to go to my mom's for dinner after his hockey practice. I ate despite having made some VERY good decisions earlier in the day. Now, this may not seem like a great stretch to you, but let me tell you, going to Burger King and getting their veggie burger and a small order of fries is pretty huge for me right now, and that is what I had done. Then, afterwards, I so felt like I needed something sweet..but instead of getting a bag of candy that I really wanted, I went to a local farmstand and bought myself a honey crisp apple. Felt like a huge accomplishment. Then, however, I picked up my son from school. He complained that I wouldn't let him stay and play for a while, because we needed to go shopping. We went shopping and he was in a rush, because he decided he needed a new pair of sneakers, because one of his "friends" told him he had better shoes than he did, and one of the girls in his class agreed. As I fought off request after request, I began wondering what the heck I've been raising, this entitled, hates the word no little creep. He wears me down sometimes, and yesterday was one of those days. So by the time I got home, I turned to my old friend food, and ate and ate.. Only thing is, I don't feel better when I eat, I just feel even worse because on top of all the other things that are going on in my world, now I'm sabotaging the thing I am most constantly thinking about..

So, I can't do anything about the fact that my son sometimes acts like a spoiled brat (other than continuing to say no when he does) and I can't change the fact that I am busy, but boy, I can sure chnage the sabotaging of my journey to fitness. And I am doing my best to take control of that, right here, right now. I have always believed that the way to better eating is through a strong committment to exercise. Don't know why, but I'm wired that way...if I'm getting a good workout in, I am much less likely to make bad eating choices. So once again, I commit to beginning my road with exercise. I am planning, once I finish this blog and doing a couple more things around the house, to go out for a nice walk. A nice, Saturday afternoon walk. Very much looking forward to it.

Today, Spark tells us to:

Find meaningful work.
The nature of your
job isn't as
important as how you
approach it. A
positive attitude
and a focus on the
meaning behind
your work make it
more rewarding.

Finally, something I can say a great big YES to!! I believe I do have a meaningful and fulfilling job. Of course, that doesn't mean that I am always bounding out of bed thrilled to be going there, but I believe strongly in the work that I do. I am the city clerk for a city of about 50,000 people. My office is responsible for many functions, but the two that most people know about is the keeping of all the vital record records, births, deaths and marriages, that occur in the city, and running the city's elections. I have a great staff and most of the vital records function is performed by them with very little involvement from me. But the elections, that is the area where I spend most of my time and energy. Even when elections are many months away, there is always work to do that is related to them. And the integrity of our process, and making sure these events are run well and with crisp efficiency is on top of my list of importance. Nothing will get me rankled faster than less than perfection when it comes to elections. Luckily, my reputation proceeds me when it comes to that, and my staff is on the same page with respect to getting it right. Today is 3 days before election day. The stress level, even though we are right where we need to be as far as preparation, is as high as it gets (though it is probably a bit higher during a presidential election year). So part of where I am mentally is the cumulative effect of the election season, and I will be much better come next Wednesday.

But it is important to take your work seriously. I took my work seriously when I had my first job as a file clerk with the IRS 30-some odd years ago.. I used to drive my boss crazy because I would go crazy if something wasn't where it was supposed to be. But that's because I took ownership of my job, I thought it a reflection of me. I have moderated since those days, recognizing that everything must be put into proper persepective, but I have to say, during the many years of my working life I have been more than astounded at the folks I see who do not take ownership of their jobs, who don't care about what they are doing, or don't take pride, or don't strive to do it better and faster. There are, sadly, many more people out there like that these days, I'm afraid. But when you feel that way about your work, how can you possibly expect to enjoy going to work?? I've had a lot of different jobs in my life, and I haven't viewed all of them as being as serious as the one I have now, but I have always taken pride in my work and it's finished product, even those measly files I used to be in charge of back in my first IRS job, getting paid $8,300 a year. I encourage anyone reading this to do the same about their work, because someone isn't paying you to do whatever it is that you do because it isn't important to them, if it weren't important, they wouldn't be paying you to do it.

So off I go, to put on my workout clothes and hit the road. Have a sparky day!!

(oops!! Just realized that I actually covered days 5 and 6 instead of 4 and 5..so tomorrow I will do day 4!!)
