H2O does a brain good

Sunday, September 18, 2011

This really has nothing to do with my September challenge or anything, but is only something I have discovered by experience. First, let me say -- I drink a LOT. Of water, that is. At least 120 ounces a day. Every day. And that is a minimum. It is not unusual for my water intake to go over 160 ounces a day. So you might say I stay pretty hydrated, which doctors, trainers, and SP will tell you has all kinds of benefits for our bodies.

But there is one benefit they don't tell you about. When you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water, you also do not get hangovers if you happen to drink a LOT of the intoxicating stuff.

Last Friday, I hung out with friends and we imbibed quite a bit. I would say I had about six or seven alcoholic beverages. Enough that I would have gotten a hangover in the past. Only I didn't get a hangover the next morning. Hangovers are caused by the dehydrating effects of alcohol. But if your body is well hydrated to begin with, alcohol doesn't dehydrate it enough to give you a hangover.

Now, I'm not saying we should all go on super binges because everyone knows that the whole-grain water really packs a caloric punch, but I'm just putting this out there as a little added benefit of giving your body plenty of water.

I love water. In the summer, I do occasionally want a nice glass of decaf iced-tea, but for the most part, water is my drink of choice. I just HATE the constant trips to the bathroom. Drives me nuts. lol I don't quite drink as much as you (WOW 160 oz!!), but I get more than the recommended 64.

    Have a great weekend! emoticon

Good for you! Thanks for sharing the info. I do not drink, but I am in a position where I have to help college students understand safe drinking habits and we definitely tell them to drink lots of water (not to combat a hangover, but so they can stay hydrated).

Yup, you're right about water. I try to get at least 64-12- ozs in each day and when I don't, my body tells me about it. I eat more and feel bad. When I drink it, I feel good. Plain and simple....

Were those 6 or 7 "drinks" calorie free? lol

I very rarely drink anymore...maybe one or two drinks a year....but still good to know.

I was just talking to my mum earlier about how this is the longest I've ever gone drinking mostly water. ( I have a coffee once or twice a week and a Fresca every two weeks) I gave up regular pop in March! Nothing quenches my thirst like water does now. Sometimes when I am having pizza or somethng like that, I think I should be drinking pop with it ...then I remember I don't like pop anymore...lol

I mostly agree with the idea of drinking lots of water and try to drink plenty. But you do know that you CAN drink too much water? Here is a link to explain. (I don't know how likely this is to occur for any regular sort of everyday person. Me slurping a couple of Dasani's is not going to do it, I suspect, lol.)
