Ghosting

Sunday, August 28, 2011

So, I thought it would be fun to ghost run an HTCer. I agreed to run all three legs. Why, I don't know but I was nervous. I haven't run more than 3x a week since surgery. What was I thinking??? Anyway, race day arrived. The first ghost leg was 6.39 miles. My HTCer, IFDEEVARUNS2, had a "hard" leg first. So, I choose a hard route also. The first 2 miles were absolutely fine, fairly flat but HOT and humid. Brought water:) The next mile as almost straight up hill. An elevation change of about 1000 feet in 3/4 of a mile. Ran some, walked some, made it to the top:) Used someone's outside spigot to refill my water bottle and soak my head. It felt great, as did I. I was excited thinking about Dee running her hills and me, running mine.
The next few miles were moderate up and down, nothing to big but it was getting hotter. Then, my favorite part, a 1/2 mile downhill that drops about 800 feet of elevation. Little did I realize that my toes were going hurt from hitting the front of my shoes. Sheesh. About half-way down, someone was watering their lawn so I ran through the sprinkler a few times, and refilled my water bottle.
Finally, home. A very cold bath to lower my temperature. I had some heat issues. But, a cold bath and lots of ice water helped. Took a nap, had some dinner and got ready for ghosting leg 2.
Leg 2, 1:30 AM. Not running outside where I live. We have coyotes, bears and other big beasties. I did not want to be a midnight snack for them! Treadmill for 5.89 miles. Boring but safe. I did not give myself enough time to really wake up first so the first mile was weird, I was half asleep and could not go in a straight line, kept bumping into the side rails. pretty funny
Leg 3 at 2PM the next/same day. An easy 4 miles. I drove to a place that had 2 miles or so of fairly flat road. It was good and uneventful.
I expected to hurt and have sore calf muscles. I feel great!!! Some minor tightness but a good stretch and all is well.
I think I will do this again:)

Just got around to reading this! Leg #1 was very exciting and passed in a blur, but the really fun leg was #2 at night. I was all decked out in my flashing vest, with a miner's lamp in the middle of my forehead. With no ambient light and no runners around me, it was as dark as can be but such fun going up and down the hills.
Leg #3 was hot, and more tiring. Maybe because I hadn't had any sleep in over 36 hours! But it was so exciting to finish. Thanks for being part of the journey with me.
