Reach Out To Absent SparkFriends

Saturday, June 25, 2011

Hi Gang -

Usually my blog space is newsy and whatnot. Well, that's not my angle tonight. NEWS: Suffice to say, my father-in-law is back in the hospital BUT my knee is feeling really well and my energy is returning. Feel better?

The universe is a card-dealer in a poker game, no?

But my message tonight is different, something that has been on my mind: Absent Friends. When I was on the island of St. Thomas in 1994, I found a mug that had seven days worth of "toasts." (Didn't buy it - talk about regret!) Sunday's toast is "To Absent Friends." My husband and I use that a lot - even when it's not on Sunday - because we have a lot of people in our thoughts.

My Challenge? Reach out to your SparkFriends that might have fallen by the wayside. Why? Because... well, you figure it out. For me, if I was absent - without a darn good reason (technical or otherwise) - I have a handful of friends that I would expect to haul me back over here and keep me on track.

I'll bet that you have those folks on your Friends list as well.

Reach out and tell them that they are missed. So many of my Friends come back and seem sheepish, even embarrassed, that they took a break / fell off the wagon. Let them know that we are not a judge and that they are welcome to rejoin the struggle that we are all facing TOGETHER!! There is strength in numbers, so let's share our strength!

Be Excellent to One Another, SparkPeople!!

This blog really struck a chord with me! I have been one of those "absent friends" who returned due to a hand extended by a Spark friend so I know how powerful it can be.
I recently read a blog in which the writer stated that she was checking her messages and if she has not heard from a "friend" in the last month they would be deleted from her friend list! I think those are the ones we need to reach out to instead of dropping them!
Your blog sends an important message to the rest of us. Thank you for writing it!

Good advice... that was me.. for about 2 years after having so much success! It can happen to anyone! We are here to help each other, not to just ask how the day went.

Fantastic idea! Once or twice a month I try to give all of my SparkFriends a goodie with a message saying how much they mean to me. I'll have to try harder to keep in touch with them!

I like to do this once in a while too! It's been a while, so once I catch up on my friends with updated blogs (A LOT), I am gonna go say hi to a few who haven't been around!!

There's an old X-Files episode wherein Burt Reynolds plays "God" (or maybe Satan? Not sure) and he is the poker dealer in the universe. I don't know the name of the episode. It's really good, though.

I have some friends who have become less active, I miss them, but sometimes I respect that people want some space. It is nice to hear from others when I am taking a break, so I will return the favour, good idea Trish
Glad you knee is getting ever stronger
Hope your FIL is coping well and not suffering

It is a great idea. Sometimes friends leave and you never see them again and it makes me sad. You are not allowed to just disappear!!! Ever!

Trish, absolutely excellent blog! I love the thought behind it. Although I appear to be absent, I'm one of those lurking in the background doing my tracking, staying on the wagon, but giving myself freedom from the computer. But you knew that already! I love the message of reaching out -- sometimes that's all it takes to get someone back on the track to good health and fitness. Good for you! You're good for us!

Hope you're having a happy, fun-filled weekend. Sorry to hear about your FIL, but so pleased to hear about your knee!
