25 or 6 to 4

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

Since last night's song was The Night Chicago Died, tonight's band is Chicago. At the Spring Forward time change, I did Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? Here's one I remember, and never understood the title. According to The Straight Dope, Robert Lamm wrote the song about a guy trying to write a song - waking up early in the morning, at 25 or (2)6 to 4 (3:34 or 3:35 AM). He can't get back to sleep, but he has trouble waking up, too.

25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago (Formerly Chicago Transit Authority) 1970

Waiting for the break of day
Searching for something to say

Flashing lights against the sky
Giving up, I close my eyes

Sitting cross-legged on the floor
Twenty-five or six to four

Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face

Wanting just to stay awake
Wond'ring how much I can take

Should I try to do some more
Twenty-five or six to four

Feeling like I ought to sleep
Spinning room is sinking deep

Searching for something to say
Waiting for the break of day

Twenty-five or six to four
Twenty-five or six to four
