2.5K run = 4K?
Saturday, March 26, 2011
On Wednesday, my family all joined the Running Room for a new store grand opening and a 2.5K run to celebrate. Well, there were a few glitches.
First, the 2.5K route did not have a volunteer at the turnaround point, so my little girls ended up running over 4K by the time everyone realized we'd gone way too far.
Second, the "mild" weather was misleading. Wind chills and overcast skies combined to make for a very chilly run.
Third, the tonnes of snow this winter made some of the route almost impassable. There were parts where the snow drifts were so high that people with strollers had to either carry the strollers or turn around.
The result of all this was that my kids got snow in their running shoes, which led to wet socks and frozen feet. Plus, me and dh had to strip down our gear and wrap everything we could find around the kids' heads to keep them warm.
The good news is that the kids were troopers - my 4-year-old completed 4.5K in 31 minutes! - my mom joined us for her first race ever and enjoyed herself (yeah!), there was cake and hot chocolate and medals at the finish line, and we all got to meet the Running Room founder, John Stanton, who won the Order of Canada last year.
Are we glad we went? Yes, for the free food and medals :) Would we do it again? No way.
