31 Days - March 25: Adjust, adjust, adjust!!

Friday, March 25, 2011

Today, Spark tells us to:

Modify your
recipes. Keep
the tradition and boost
the nutrition by making
substitutions: whole
grain flour, less salt,
heart-healthy fats, half
the sugar, and beans
instead of meat. Your
taste buds won't know
the difference!

Well, I'm not sure that your taste buds won't know the difference, but just because it's different doesn't mean it can't be good. I do make substitutions all the time, usually using lower fat, but not nonfat, replacements, low sodium replacements. I found a great recipe on spark for banana bread that uses apple sauce instead of oil, and it is really delicious. I have a fairly forgiving palate, so if I really want to know if something passes the replacement test, I have to look to my husband, who likes to and wants to eat healthy but is far less forgiving of some of the substitutions I sometimes make, and he likes it too.

Not every modification is going to be good, so just keep on experimenting. One of my tricks is to google a particular dish and look at all the different recipe versions that come up..then I sort of pick the healthiest options and mix and match. I have to say I have not yet really screwed anything up using that technique..

Just another arrow in our quiver for trying to eat healthier while still enjoying!!

Have a Sparky day!!

I agree! I am constantly substituting "healthier" ingredients in my recipes. Have a great Friday!

You are SO on target with this blog post! I think a lot of people are afraid to try new things. There's only one way to find out, and that IS to try.

If something doesn't turn out good, it's a lesson well invtested. And quite often, we can find an amazing wonderful food treat...with much more nutritional value, much less fats, carbs, sodium or sugars!

I love doing this! Great post.
