31 Days - March 10: Eat Your Veggies!
Thursday, March 10, 2011
Today, Spark tells us to:
Eat 4-6 servings of vegetables daily. High in nutrients and low in calories, veggies can help prevent diabetes, stroke, heart disease and more. One serving is equal to 1/2 cup.
Well, of course, our moms and dads, aunts and uncles, grandparents and doctors have always been right about this, for the reasons listed by Spark as well as for a more practical purpose: when you fill up on veggies, it might keep you from eating other, far less healthy foods. Kind of like going back to yesterday's blog, with the salad issue. One of the greatest reasons to eat that salad is that it can take the place of the bag of chips, or fill you enough to keep you from having that second roll at dinner..
But to truly be able to benefit from this approach, something else is necessary that is one of my biggest downfalls: listening to your body. It does no good to have a nice big salad with dinner in the hopes that it will help to fill you up if you do not listen to your body to know when it is full. This is one of the hardest things for me, one reason is that I tend to eat quite fast. I do my best to slow it down, but between a lifetime of wolfing down food and my crazed schedule, I admit I need to do a lot better on this, and have been trying. What I have discovered is that when I eat more slowly, I tend to eat less. Not sure if it's because I am making the conscious effort to "listen" or not, but it definitely seems to help.
So...eat your veggies, eat them slowly, and listen to your body's hunger pangs..and when the silence from those pangs is deafening, put the fork down!!
Have a Sparky day!!
