31 Days - March 8: Slow Down!!!

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Today, Spark advises us to:

Slow down. Savoring your food in a calm environment helps you tune-in to your body's signals. You're less likely to overeat and experience problems like acid reflux when you take your time to
really enjoy the moment.

How many times have you sat down, eaten dinner, and then said, "what's for dinner?" I suppose it's good that I can honestly say it's been a long time since that has happened to me, but it has happened to me in the past, on fairly regular occasions..

Our lifestyles make it so difficult to slow down and savor a meal.. But it is so important to do just that, because when you do, there is such an increase in awareness of the eating, of the pleasurable flavors, of the act of nourishing yourself.. Those are just fancy words, I know, but it's amazing how fulfilling it felt to just write them, as I thought about the meaning of the words..and interestingly it makes me think of the meal I shared with my husband and son last night.

In my family, we don't often all get to sit together for our dinners, given our crazy schedules, and last night should not have been one of those nights either, but the stars must have just been aligned perfectly, as I had dinner ready and my husband got home a few minutes earlier than usual, so he was able to eat before running out the door with my son to hockey practice. Really, it was only about a 10 minute meal together, but we were able to sit, eat, chat..and felt so relaxing in spite of the brevity of it. Why? Because we were all sitting, not distracted by a computer, newspaper or television.

So I guess I learned a lesson from that meal, though I didn't realize it until just now..you don't need tons of time, you just need to cut out the distractions, and mealtime can be a satisfying experience in even the busiest of times..

Have a sparky day!!

So true (I can totally relate to not eating as a family and no distractions.

Nice when you can sit together, even if it is only 10 minutes.

I am telling my son that constantly as he's just like a ravenous animal at times with his food. "Slow Down!"

I am so bad with this one. I'm usually Sparking during breakfast and occasionally during lunch. Supper is usually the one meal where there aren't any distractions. I need to work on improving!
