31 Days - March 5, 6, 7: water, planning ahead, trans fats, and a little bit about Lent

Monday, March 07, 2011

You know, the worst thing about getting sick is that it throws you off your game. So, we'll cover 3 days worth of advice today..

First, drink water. There have been times in my life that I have been a soda (or pop) drinker..but for some reason, that is one bad dietary habit that I never formed. Not that I won't have an occasional diet coke, but really, I'd rather the water. If I feel like being fancy, I'll have a glass of san pellegrino sparkling water with a wedge of lime, but really, just give me that nice bottle of water to carry around and I'm perfectly content. Unfortunately, with the water comes the multiple trips to the bathroom, but you get used to that, and I find that when I'm in a good water drinking groove, even that lessens. One thing I try to do is get my water in early in the day so I'm not up several times during the night to go to the bathroom. I wish I had some advice to give to my spark buddies who struggle with the soda issue, but other than trying some kind of sparkling water or flavored seltzer to try to imitate the carbonation in the soda, I must admit, and you have no idea how hard this is for me to say, "I've got nothing." : (

I'm too busy to cook. Raise your hand if you've ever thought, said, or heard this! It's the story of my life. Before hockey took over mine and my family's existence, this issue was addressed by spending much of my Sunday in my kitchen, preparing meals that could be heated and eaten during the week. But SH (since hockey), I've had to adjust on the fly, and what I have adjusted to is the very useful crock pot. Spark has many great slow cooker recipes that I have used (just do a search on the spark recipe site using "slow cooker"). But I have finally given in to the one reality of using a slow cooker that I've been trying to deny for years: the BEST slow cooker results, especially with all iterations of stew beef, involves browning the beef first before it goes into the crock pot. But still, to have that meal waiting for you when you walk in the door is probably the BEST think in the world. Finally, I will say that one of the biggest helps I've found in trying to get a meal on the table quickly is pre-cut and pan ready veggies and microwave in the bag frozen veggies, brown rice and other side dishes..

Avoid trans fats. If it says "partially hydrogenated" anything in the ingredients, leave it in the store. Period.

Okay, I'm all caught up! One last, but certainly not least, thing. Today marks the start of Lent for me as a Maronite Catholic. It is my "Ash Monday." For Catholics, Lent is a time of reflection, sacrifice and cleansing. I do not traditionally "give up" anything for Lent, preferring to affirmatively act, such as saying the rosary every day, try to go to Mass more than once a week... This year I am going to give up something: chocolate. I will still take those other affirmative actions, but this year calls for me to give up chocolate. I am not sure how difficult this is going to be, but let's face it, it's supposed to be hard, God died for me, I think I can stay away from chocolate for 40 days..

Have a Sparky day!

So true about water. Prefer it over soda too. Just was thinking about it yesterday when I brought some soda home for my son as a movie day treat. And to think I used to crave the carbonation of soda. Good tip about getting it all in early to avoid the night time visits, LOL.
