What a week!

Friday, February 04, 2011

I always joke about hoping for snow so we can get a snow day at work. I work at a University and my wish kind of came true - 3 days off this week. We did have snow on Tuesday - so that was an official snow day. Wednesday we were off because of freezing temps. 2 hour delay on Thursday, went to work then was let go at 4pm. Monday was the only full day I worked this week. The high winds and low temps on tuesday and wednesday had us in the negative temps. Yesterday, woke up to -7 degrees and that was not including the wind chill. Some of our days were something like -22 degrees below with the wind. Wow, I know some of you are used to that, but for Albuquerque, its quite cold and shocking.

Originally, today was supposed to be just a 2 hour delay, but then because of the State of Emergency here in New Mexico - thousands of people are without natural gas to heat their homes, my employer, plus many other big employers have closed down to conserve the gas usage. Also, there have been problems with freezing pipes at lots of businesses and busted water lines all over town - its been kinda crazy. Apparently, because of our temps, lowest the state has seen in about 21 years, the drain on the natural gas and electric grids are causing all kinds of outages throughout the state. Wasn't sure if we were going to wake up this morning to no heat or no electricity, but thankfully we have both. Still, the Governor is asking residents to turn down their thermostats by 10 degrees, and not use any other unnecessary appliances, portable heaters, etc., (I did both!) until the utilities have recovered and the temperature starts warming.

Yesterday, the high for Albuquerque reached about 19 degrees, but today should be right around freezing (32 degrees). Weekend should be about 40 - so things are looking up.

I have been taking advantage of these days by catching up on Spark, doing lots of reading and watching movies. Bummer is, with the cold temps and winds, I haven't gotten in my usual walking, but yesterday wasn't too bad, so I got about 2.5 miles in - and I will take a walk this afternoon too. Monday is the only day this week that I got in my 10,000+ steps. But next week should be back to normal (I hope!!!). I sure wish that I already had my Wii - which I should be getting in the next couple of weeks for my birthday. With these days of being home and inside, would have been nice to workout with my Wii.

We have been invited to 3 superbowl parties this weekend, makes us think we should just stay home and have our own party (just the two of us!!!) I'm really not into football, but my sweetie is a Steelers fan, although he doesn't even really watch football - so if we do decide to go out, I don't plan on staying for the whole game. Still want to get home at a decent time and get ready for the work week.

wow that is really cold even for us here in PA. I sure hope the weather has warmed up for you down there. It's supposed to warm up for us today and into this week but not sure about the end of the week. I haven't walked outside for months now and that's not like me. kim

I can sympathize with you. This has been a rough winter everywhere. Are you getting a Wii Fit game for your Wii? It makes exercising a game not work. My DIL has Just Dance for the Wii. It gives you a good workout too. She left it here this past week and I have been having a ball with it. I've been looking for a used one but haven't found one yet.
