Help! I am trapped in my house with bored children!

Thursday, January 20, 2011

My car won't start and it is a 98 minute bus ride to my kids' school. That would be a total of 6 hours on the bus, lots of standing in the cold, and frozen feet. I have low, low, low bp and a low core temperature so cold is not my friend.

So I told the kids they could stay home today. It is 10:00 am my time. They have both finished extra math, and reading assignments. I just chose randomly from their book. They also did their spelling pre-tests. Fed the animals. Ran around the house. And now they are bored.

They are currently playing with the cat and dog. And by playing I mean they are running around the house meowing, woofing, and laughing. I don't know who is having more fun, the kids or the critters. I give it half an hour before everyone is bored.

Maybe they the can play "clean the house"...I mean mad scientist with polishing rags and toilet scrubbers...yes, I am an evil Mom, but I haven't scrubbed a toilet or tub in 7 years! HAH!

My mom used to have us pick up our toys and clean our rooms and if it wasn't done within a certain amount of time, anything left out was up for grabs by the other sibling - Now, I do remember that the first time, this didn't work and there was lots of screaming (on my part) because I had left some stuff out, but the next time, I didn't miss a thing. Smiles

I like the treasure hunt idea below.

It is way too cold this morning! And its not supposed to improve much (at least in this part of the province) and I am there with you! But at least my daughter is 3.5yrs so its a little easier to amuse her...we made a list of "chores" and she is consumed with trying to do all of her chores!

One of the things my kids and I did over the summer was life size drawing on each other. We got big paper, took turns laying on them and tracing one another. Then we all choose names from a basket on who we got to design. We were allow to cut it out and use whatever we wanted to make the person. Anything from clothes to glitter or noodles to yarn. We all kind found our own area and set timers for every 10 minute to make a switch. I have 6 amazing kids, so it was cool to see how it ended up after each of adding our part to the person. We weren't allow to see our own until everyone had there turn. This was something we did more than once. Sometimes we would just spend 30 minutes on one person and at times we would be serious and others funny, Sometimes during switches we could only add and not change things. This is a great way to find out about each other and share. Just a thought...
    Have a blessed day!

Hide things around the house and then make a treasure map to get there. Take 10 paces towards the kitchen, turn towards the TV and take 5 paces. Search in a low place for the next clue. Or have them see how far they can walk with a pillow balanced on their head. Use your imagination and have some fun.
