Knowledge is POWER!

Sunday, January 09, 2011

Now you can say, "Duh!" about this statement, but let me tell you exactly what it means to me today.

Yesterday was crazy. My son was participating in an all day wrestling meet and eating at those is always challenging. We should have brought food but that just didn't happen that day. Of course, celebrations were in order since he placed 3rd out of about 50 boys in his weight class. We went to BJ's, his favorite restaurant.

So here's where the knowledge comes in. (I know, you thought I was rambling.) When I finished logging in my meals for yesterday (and I was brutally honest with the calorie count), I came up with DOUBLE the calories that I am supposed to consume per day. So today, I will be very careful with planning my meals, drinking my water, exercising and just being more conscious of the actions I take today.

Those sports events are a nightmare to eat at. No good choices at all.

emoticon to your son on his win.
Just remember we can't change the past. You are focusing on today and making good choices to reach your goals in the future. We're all in this for the long haul so don't let 1 little oop's get you down.

Now you know what to do next time. We all learn from our experiences--and I know you will bring some healthy snacks with you next time. You must be so proud of your son--that is a wonderful feat!! Stay positive and it's true that we all do one step back and then two steps forward!

I can relate - I was not at a wrestling match, but have been attending to many events that involve eating out and about. This week-end was a funeral up in the ice box of Minnesota. Out two evenings for dinner plus all the food at the funeral. Fortunately or unfortunately I didn't have access to a computer so I did not track. I probably could not count that high, but you know tomorrow is a new day and I am okay.

That is why the tracker is so important and planning meals. Sometimes before eating out I will look up food just to make sure of what I will be eating. Reading SP articles help too, they tell you what to stay away from. It is a learning process and takes time. Forgive yourself and move on....like you said "Knowledge is power!" We love to eat out and I refuse to give it up-so we have learned the best places to go and the types of things we can order on the menu. So far so good! The sodium though is what gets you-why they have to use soooooo much is beyond me!!! Also the portions are ridiculous - you need to learn how to size it up, like SP says 4 oz of meat is like a deck of cards or the open palm of your hand. Stay strong and keep going! emoticon

The McDonald's Mushroom and Swiss Angus Burger that I had for lunch added up to 720 calories. Oops! But, honestly, I knew it was too much when i saw that it was a 1/3 of a pound. I knew it was too much about halfway through when my tummy told me, "I'm full." Did I listen to that inner wise woman? Nope. I did enjoy that hamburger, though.

A lot of times I will look up and actually plan my meals before I get there -- like at hometown buffet I never ever have chocolate syrup or those delicious healthy looking cakes like carrot cake or spice cake. I like to had a fit when I saw the calories! Because I'm on carb addicts I usually can figure out something that will fit into the plan. That's why I love the plan. I'm never totally off unless I chose to go that direction. Good luck in the future.

We have all had those whoops moments. I know I have definitely had my share.
Tracking your food can be a real eye opener and a jaw dropper as well. emoticon

Congrats to your son on placing 3rd in the wrestling meet.

Thanks for sharing - yes, alas - I have not been to BJs for many years now. Used to love to go to the one in Laguna Beach -- but, you know, I never knew the exact calorie counts on their pizza but the deep dish is soaked in oil - that's why it's so tasty! I a salad girl with low fat dressing these days and an enjoyer of cottage cheese and fruits/veggies - I haven't had any 'sinful' food at all since starting SP. Feeling a lot better too!

You're right - need to plan ahead for dangerous occasions as yesterday - or take a walk to an alternative location for your food.

Now that you mention it, our group Christmas lunch for work was at BJs in Lake Forest (or somewhere around there). I opted out entirely and went walking at lunch instead. Definitely felt like a party pooper - but I stuck to my Spark meal plan! Sometimes I feel a bit obsessive, but I'm really determined to loss the weight I've committed to lose in the timeframe I'd like to lose it in.

    Best wishes to you!!

Congratulations to your son! That's definitely an accomplishment to be proud of.
Thanks for sharing this page with me. We all have days that the celebration is worth the extra efforts it will take to return to "normal," don't we!

First of all, congrats to your son for placing 3rd!! I have been tracking my nutrition for about a week and have yet to eat within my range. And I'm not eating out that much. I'm watching TV and they're advertising Biggest Loser Meal Plan. Sounds tempting. You've got a great plan for today so stick to it and don't let temptation have its way with you. Thanks for your honesty. Accountability is very important in the battle of the bulge. Don't forget I'm walking with you on the road to success and we're holding each other up. I plan to go to the mall to walk my 10,000 steps and I'll visualize you walking with me.
