Today Spark advises us to call in the reinforcements:
Share your goals with family and friends for invaluable support and assistance. Confiding in them is a powerful motivator for helping you remain consistent and persistent. Some may be willing to modify their own lives to help you giving up soda or watching the kids while you hit the gym, for example.
I have a couple of thoughts, mostly positive, but not all..
First, in keeping with the whole theory that this road to health is a journey that is not necessarily just about losing weight, sharing your goals iwth those nearest and dearest to you may put thoise folks, also, on the road to health, and there's nothing wrong with that! Of course, when you share, you open up the possibility for one of my personal pet peeves: the watchdog. Sometimes, when you share the fact that you are "dieting" (I do not believe that word is an accurate description of what we are trying to do, but let's face it, many of the uninitiated are going to hear all you say like "blah, blah, blah" and hear "she (or he) is on a diet"), you awaken the eating police tendencies in them. They think they are being helpful when they see you eat something they believe is "not on your diet" and remind you that you are on a diet. As well meaning as this behavior is, it is one of my least favorite things about "sharing."
Another thing that is on my yuck list is the folks who don't want to talk about anything except dieting.. Oh my goodness, it's like being put in a room full of folks scratching their fingernails along a chalkboard (an analogy that will soon be obselete, by the way!). Well, I'm doing the South Beach Diet, I prefer the Atkinson, I do Weight Watchers, I like Nutrisystems.. blah, blah, blah.. Shutttttttt uppppppppp!!!!!!!!! Just shut up and do it for goodness sake! I mean really, no wonder no one can lose weight when all so many folks want to do is talk about what they don't/can't/will "never" eat again!! Can't we PLEASE talk about something else??
Personally, I like to ride my road to health in private. Not to say that I won't try to engage someone that I really see struggling with some of the spark basics, but only in a "there's a really great website you might want to take a look at" kind of way. And it's not that I never talk about it with my friends and family, it's just not the centerpiece of any conversation because I have always been most successful (though admittedly I haven't had a large weight loss in a long time) when it's just a matter of fact way of life, without lots of hoopla surrounding it..
I'm all for calling in the reinforcements, but do it in a way that works for you. If being surrounded by watchdogs works, by all means, call in the dogs! If you feel you need to educate your closest friends and family about what you need so you can succeed, this is great advice. But be wary the pitfalls!
