31 Days to Healthier Holidays - December 11

Today, Spark reminds us to:

"Enjoy a preparty snack. If you arrive famished, you're more likely to devour too much of the wrong things. Try a combination of fiber, protein and healthy fats for more filling power."

Great advice, for sure, but I'd expand it to this: Don't go ANYWHERE hungry, for the same reason.. When you are not in complete control of the food choices surrounding you, i.e. at home, you are subject to the unhealthy food choices that are sure to surround you: in the vending machine at work, at the food court in the mall, certainly at holiday parties and gatherings, even at the grocery store..

I think the solution for me, when I'm going really good, is that I always try to have something with me, I keep 90 calorie quaker granola bars in the car, I always try to have a piece of fruit at my desk and a yogurt in the fridge at work, a small package of almonds in my pocketbook. Can't always have that perfect combination of fiber, protein and healthy fat, but something that tastes good and will take the edge of hunger off.. An important strategy, I think.

A third of the way through this month, I'd like to report that I am aware of lots of stuff that I'm doing. I'm far from perfect in my quest, but I am also not totally out of control. So my goal during this month of maintaining an awareness of what I'm putting in my mouth seems to be being accomplished by this daily journal keeping.. An interesting development..

    Timely advice as I am heading to grandma's annual Christmas Tea tomorrow which always offers much yummy items to consume. Thankfully she does them in tea style fashion so portions are not huge. I do need to eat a small something before going so I'm not starving when I arrive.

    I always make sure that I eat before going to the grocery store, otherwise I end up buying "junk" food, because it all looks so good. You can do it!!

    The holidays are a challenge but the trick is not to make them an excuse. Stay the course!
