31 Days to Healthier Holidays - Dec 7 and 8

I'm not sure how I forgot to post yesterday, but I can tell you this, not posting was not good, because I had a very unproductive and undisciplined day yesterday. But as they say, it is what it is, and there's no crying over spilt milk.. Thus, here I am today with TWO days worth of tips and my thoughts about them. Before I start, let me just say that I sometimes think I'm being a bit presumptuous to think that I have anything to say about these topics that anyone else would find enlightening.. These daily blogs are really just my own exercise and way of trying to stay focused on the journey during this season full of food and drink and no time, so please don't assume I'm trying to tell anyone how to approach things, I'm just giving my take and strategies on this stuff so I keep my eye on the ball....

Day 7 (December 7) Budget Your Calories Wisely..

nothing new here, we've been reading forever how it's important to remember that if tonight's plans include some kind of gathering where you know there's going to be lots of food around, you might want to go lightly during the rest of the day so you can partake a little more at the event. Another approach is to use your weekly "splurge day," if you are a "splurge day" kind of person, for that day, but that only works if you're going to have one such event in a week!! For me this kind of fits into that Eureka moment I had back a couple of months ago..by recording your food intake you can make sure you have an awareness of how many calories you've eaten/how many calories you have left for the day. For me, when I can keep myself from that mindless eating, I'm much more inclined to be good.

This also brings up an important point for me: what is the goal during this season? I mean, really, am I just setting myself up to fail to think that doing anything more than maintaining my healthy lifestyle (exercising, eating with some modicom of control) is a "win" during this time of year? Shouldn't weight loss be a bonus that may or may not occur during this season? I must admit, I fluctuate back and forth on how I feel about this issue. But in the end, if I only manage to maintain during this season, that's okay with me.. This journey is about building good habits, taking baby steps towards the goal, and maintaining an even keel so that I don't get too up or too down..If I can keep myself on an even keel, I am much more likely to stay the course and remain on the journey..

Day 8 (December 8) - Stay Organized

Spark suggests keeping a running list of things that need to be done, and to try to multitask (that's actually my word) when you are out and about running errands so you are efficient in the use of your time.

It can be very discouraging to have that long list of things to be done, but at the same time, if you don't keep all that needs to be done out there in front of you, you miss many opportunities to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. So it is important to know where you are with respect to the things you have to get done so you don't miss out on those opportunities to cross things off your list efficiently.. and also to plan each day out to make sure that you are not only crossing holiday related things off your list, but also things like your daily exercise. Because it is so easy to let that be the first casualty of a busy day..I certainly know that from personal experience..

    Tina,

    I love seeing other people's interpretations of these tips, so don't feel like it's not appreciated. I love the list suggestion because I already do that. When I get up I think about what needs to be done for the day and most days I write it down. Seeing items crossed off of the list just make me feel like I've accomplished something.
