Today's hint: Simplify your gift list
To cut down the stress of those long gift lists, Spark suggests drawing names, or donating money in the names of gift recipients..
Over the years, as our family has grown, and more and more "little ones" have joined us, our lists have exploded. So we have decided that the last thing any of our little ones need are more $10-$15 todays for Christmas, that we would stop the gift giving amongst the kids in our extended families..(we're talking 2nd and 3rd cousins here, who in many cases are as close as siblings..). So I am one step ahead in that regard of cutting down the shopping list.
I have also become a big catalog shopper. I take my list, sit down with a catalog, and knock off multiple presents in an hour, without leaving the house, and wait for the gifts to come to me, baby..
I have decided that the whimsical gift is okay. Like I have one person on my list who is a single woman who has everything. She's exceedingly difficult to buy for, because she goes out and buys what she wants when she wants it.. But she loves the Red Sox, so this year, when I was sitting down with that catalog, I found a Red Sox pennant jigsaw puzzle..but I have no idea how she feels about jigsaw puzzles. A year ago, I would have tried to figure out the answer to that question, but this year, I bought it.. Whimsical?? You bet.. But I thought, if someone bought me a jigsaw puzzle, even if I don't do them all the time, I'd sit and do it and would likely enjoy it. I also am going to buy some puzzle glue or something like that (I know they have it, I just have to find it) that will keep the puzzle together and allow her to display it..
One final example of how we have simplified our list is with respect to people we work with. Both my husband and I manage small offices, and each have 5 people in the office that we wish to express our thanks to for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.. Each year, finding nice gifts for not a lot of money has become more of a chore.. So we just buy them Target Gift Cards, and I will add a little package of cookies from my holiday baking with each gift.. Who can't use a Target Gift Card, especially at this time of year??
My list is still long, but these little tricks have made them easier and faster to get names checked off.. Easier means less stress, for me, less stress means less eating!! Voila!
