Holy Mack! I aced the Run for The Cure!

Sunday, October 03, 2010

I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 27, and my Dad's second partner, my step-mom, is now dealing with breast cancer that has metastasized to her brain. For the last decade, I have avoided the pink ribbon gatherings pretty efficiently, but today I changed that.

My lovely man, joined me and we ran the 5k - he's a runner so he was a great support for me, and we finished at a run, and completed the circuit by doing 5 and 1s and a couple 2.5 and 1s at the end.

It was huge for me for so many reasons - most obvious, and another private one - one of the major reasons I lost the 70lbs was to ensure I was doing my best to be with my son long into his adult life, to see my grandchildren, to be there the way he needs. Running today, I wore a sign saying I was running for Val (my mom) and Mary Jane (my step mom) - but in reality I was running for my son. Next year - I'll wear that sign.
