Not a fun way to spend the long weekend . . .

Monday, July 05, 2010

Well, instead of going camping, I spent most of the long weekend at the hospital looking after my mom. She has been in since Wednesday evening. I was there 1/2 day on Thursday, All day Friday, Saturday and Sunday and 1/2 day today. I was finally able to leave when my sister showed up. My dad is 83 so I don't like to leave him by himself, since he does not always comprehend or retain everything the doctor and other hospital staff tell him. They still have not really figured out what is wrong, but the doctor is pretty sure she has some type of infection in her blood. She was waiting for the blood cultures to start coming back this afternoon. They attempted two lumbar punctures but because of my mom's arthritis and scoliosis in her back, they could not get thru. They also attempted three MRI's. The doctor wanted to rule out a bleed in the brain, but mom moved a lot. Even with being fairly sedated she just moved. The MRI pictures were not the best but they feel confident that she does not have a bleed in her head. This morning she was still fairly groggy, but better than yesterday. Her blood pressure was really low, in fact, it started to get too low (I think) this afternoon before I left.

I am hoping that by tomorrow morning when I go back, she will be doing better and they will have a diagnosis. At the moment, the doc is treating her as if she has meningitis, so she is getting 3 types of antibiotics.

This is all so frustrating and exhausting, but we just want her to feel better and get home soon. Its probably going to be a few more days before she can return home.
