A blog all about sleep, plus more photos...of course!

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Warning! This blog may be boring for those of you without children. Sorry!

Things are looking up! For awhile now our girl seems to be getting into a semi regular sleep schedule. She is doing very well interms of sleeping through the night. Last night she slept from 10 - 4:30, then fed for 30 mins until 5:00 and then slept until 8:00 am. NO complaints!

Her days are as follows.....give or take as each day is slightly different.

8:00 - 8:30 feed
9 - 12 either nap or stroller ride followed by nap
12 - 1:00 - feed
1- 2:30 or sometimes 3:00 playtime
3:00 - 4:00 - feed
4:00 - 6:00 playtime and sometimes nap but for only 30 mins to 1 hour
6:00 - ????? feed...this can go on forever!
Bath time usually around 7-8:00 depending on feeding before hand.
8:00 - 9:00 Playtime
9:00 - 10:00 - sleepy...sometimes she is out at 9 and other days she is wide awake and wants to play and will not sleep until 10 pm.

I do not know why she like to go to bed so late. We have even tried bathing her at 6:30 but she is WIDE awake! She gets sleepy in the early evening, around 4 or so and I have tried keeping her awake but then she gets cranky. When should babies start being on a schedule? As of now, she is calling the shots. When she is hungry, I feed her. When she is tired, I let her sleep, but for how long should I continue doing this. As of now I am VERY, VERY, happy with this schedule!!!

I am enjoying learning more every day and trust me, I have a great deal to learn!!! My husband has been a dream! When I breastfeed during the night, he rubs my feet, gets me water or a snack...so sweet and instead of going to bed, most nights he lays underneath the rocker with his pillow to be close to us. One night he used one of the boppy as a pillow. It was too cute! By the way, those make a great pillow as they wrap around the neck. He has really gone out of his way to help me. My parents are coming this weekend to help out as he will be heading overseas for a few days. It is his first international trip since Michaela was born and he is already so sad to be leaving her. We are going to miss him dearly.

I am going to make the most of this time as she is napping. I never know how much longer I have to get everything done around the house.

Here are a few recent pictures of our girl from the past 2 weeks......I just LOVE taking photos of her!! I want to remember each moment. Always such fun sharing them with you all.

She is absolutely beautiful. And re: the schedule... When mine were this young, I always fed mine and let them sleep at will. I did try to keep them awake in the evenings so they would sleep thru the night, but I fed them when hungry and put them down for naps when they needed them. :)

My little Emma is 9 months old this week. She has liked staying up late from the beginning too. I bath her at 7:30 and try to put her to bed about 8:30, but she stays wide awake usually until 10:00. Sometimes I'm lucky and she'll sleep most of the night, but the bad thing is that she wants to nurse ALL night long!! And then she likes to wake up early too. Your schedule sounds good. When they are that little I think you are supposed to kinda let them make up their own schedule. I think I started to try to put Emma on a schedule at about 4 months, but she still does what she wants. :-) Michaela is gorgeous like her momma.

I just love reading about your days with Michaela! She is such an adorable little one, and I get to relive the early days of my daughter's life through you :) Her schedule seems almost identacle to my daughter's schedule at that age. You can try to encourage her to get on a schedule whenever you feel that you *need* to, but as long as you are ok with what she's doing, I'd just keep letting her call the shots. Babies are really good at knowing when they need to eat and sleep!

She is so cute and boy does she have a lot of hair! my kids were bald!
as for her schedule.. it will change as she gets older. to all the moms that have a schedule and stick to it.. wow.. more power to ya.. i dont know how they do it. My daughter is 2 and still trying to call the shots! hahaha.. I try to keep her on schedule but sometimes its just not that easy. She is down to one nap a day and boy does she need it. My son is now 6 and he pretty much stopped napping at 4.
Looks like you and your family are enjoying your little girl. They grow up so fast. Cherish the memories!

Your daughter is adorable!! I love taking pictures of mine son too. It's hard not to when they just look so cute all the time!

I let my son make his own schedule (which was similar to yours) until he was just about 3 months old. Then I read a book about getting your child to sleep through the night and how schedule was key. They suggested that a child go to be between 7:30 and 8 pm each night. I started that and he slept longer!

He's 2 1/2 years old now and goes to bed at 8:30 pm. It works great.

The sleeping gets better as they get older.

The pictures are absolutely adorable!! It is good that you are enjoying every moment with her.
I had four babies and always let them set their own schedules. Breastfeeding allowed me that flexibility and I found they were happy and content. My daughter-in-law has done the same thing with my grandson (I am holding him in my profile picture :-) and he has also done very well.
You are obviously a wonderful mom and understand your daughter's needs perfectly. You husband also sounds like a dream...it is so nice when they are involved.

Just adding one more voice to say that she doesn't need to be put on a set schedule yet. Around 6 months old my son got settled into more of a schedule because that was when he started sleeping through the night, and it just sort of fell into place. Also, feedings will get much faster as she grows, mine went from being an hour long to about 15 minutes, which opens up a considerable amount of time in your day!

If you are happy and she is happy then you must be doing everything right. :)

I think your doing great with a schedule. The Doctor always told us that they will let you know what they want. We found out with the twins it is even more fun. Lilly is sound asleep but Logan wakes up hungry so we wake up Lilly to feed to keep them on the same schedule. Sometime times its Lilly, but mostly Logan that wakes up first. Your doing great and she looks absolutely beautiful. Congrats and goodluck.

I still can't get over how beautiful she is! Ethan has that same bouncy chair, and still like to play with it. Of course, his idea of playing with it is standing up to it and playing with the toys! LOL! And we still do the cluster feedings between dinner and bedtime, too. Sometimes it gets old, but then I remember that I'm going to miss it one of these days!

At this age, it's normal for her to call the shots-- she should eat/sleep etc. according to her schedule. I think once she is awake and only needs an afternoon nap, I'd set her on an earlier bedtime schedule... but, since you are home with her, you might want to have her on a later schedule and sleep in a little later, so that Micah can spend more time with her after work. When they are little, it's more about routine and consistency than early v. late. If they have to go to daycare and be up early, getting a good night's sleep might change bedtime-- that's all later though.
Right now, just let her guide you-- she'll tell you what she needs!

My DD is 9 weeks old and her schedule changes slightly almost everyday EXCEPT that we always put her down between 9-9:30. She doesn't always sleep for the same amount of time after that but it at least gives DH and I an hour or more of time together before we go to bed. Also gives us chance to give our poor dog some alone time. He has not been a fan of "the baby" and doesn't see what the big deal is about this little thing that cries and takes up mom and dad's time. LOL

    Great pictures!

Newborns have their own schedules and there's not much you can do about it. I know with both my kids as they got older they settled into a routine. Now it hasn't been that long ago, so I should remember when, but I don't. I just know that mine are 2 & 3 and they are still on a good routine. EVERYDAY they eat their lunch and then take a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon. And believe me they will continue to do this as long as they keep falling asleep. It's some much needed break for Mommy!! I'm sure you will know when your little princess is ready for that routine and she will probably just fall into it. And as far as staying up later~ both my babies did that. They also slept in later too. Now that they are older they are in bed by 9 (8 in the winter when it's dark by then), but they are usually up by 7am. Each baby is different and you just have to listen to them most of the time. Right now SHE'S the BOSS!! lol!! What a beauty you have! Have a wonderful day!

Her schedule looks good. I wouldn't be too concerned about it. As she starts eating more she will start going longer between feedings. I think it is important to keep her days as similar as possible, that helps get her into a routine.

Thanks for sharing, she is adorable! It sounds like she has settled into a pretty good schedule all on her own - I would just try to keep it as consistent as possible from day-to-day. If she is sleepy and needs a nap around 4PM I would let her - keeping her awake could backfire later in the evening as overly tired babies sometimes have a more difficult time falling asleep. Does she feed again closer to bedtime, or is the 6PM feeding the last of the night? You might try feeding her one more time before bed, if she seems at all interested - it might help her sleep even longer before she awakes in the night to eat again. If she isn't interested, though, I wouldn't worry about it, she is already doing great with the sleep!

I remember those 4:00 PM to whenever feeding times. Actually I think we still have them but now the kids can tell me what they want. If your happy with the schedule that's all that matters. I used to love having my baby girl to myself at night after everyone was in bed.

As I do not have any children - I have no idea about sleep schedules! I have 4 nephews and I think they were all different so no help there but it seems like you are doing a great job by just noting her likes and dislikes and I'm sure you will learn more and more about when she likes to sleep!

Such great photos too! Hope you have a great day! emoticon

What a cute baby! Thanks for sharing the photos. I agree with other posters that she looks extremely alert for a newborn.

The schedule sounds good for now! I think just paying attention to her needs and cues and adjusting as necessary makes sense.

I didn't read what the others have posted. But, I wouldn't worry about a schedule. Her own schedule looks great. OH! Beleive me, compared to Daniel's schedule..it looks fabulous! he doesn't go to sleep at night til 11:3-12!!! YIKES! Then he sleeps 4-5 hrs eats(while we both sleep) and then again in 2 hr. He's like Michaela, too in that he eats alot in the evening and cries alot too. That's normal. They're stocking up their bellies for these nice long sleeps they give us.
Enjoy this time-love the pictures,Jen! I absolutely love how she looks right at you so full of love and awe at her beautiful mommy!!! Hugs to you, dear friend.

You're right to let her decide the schedule. She knows what she wants!

We used Johnson's baby wash with lavendar. It's made specifically as a bedtime bath wash. The scent is supposed to help relax baby and help them sleep better. Our boys loved it!

I think you are right on track. Emily started sleeping all through the night by 2 months and really got on a schedule then. Now Elliott geez, that is a whole other story. But really I think she is moving into her own schedule keep flexible like you are and it will go by smoothly. She is absolutely adorable!
