Saturday's 5k

Sunday, March 21, 2010

I meant to do this yesterday to let you know how it went.

This 5k is a fundraiser for a local athletic program at a private high school and I must say they did a fine job of organizing and running this event. The race started at 9 a.m. and with awards and all it was over by 10:30. There were between 300-400 people I would guess. Lots of green as it was Run the Shamrock. Green everywhere and then there was ME in my orange. Of course -right! LOL

I decided I wanted to attempt to use my racewalking training but then I saw the course and knew this wasn't going to work entirely. Too many hills to keep the form and 'true' racewalk competitions don't include hills from what I've read. Anyway, I set out about in the middle of the pack. They had it set up for the faster people in front and on down thru to those slower so as not to hold folks up.

I ended up doing pretty good. At the mile mark they were yelling out times and I was just over 12 minutes, the 2nd mile mark I was a little over 24 so I thought cool, I'm doing a good pace. Then the last 1.1 miles were killer with the hills. I tried but ended up jogging a bit and I was tired of course but did end up under 38 minutes. I think the official clock said 37:44. I was pleased with this.

The temps were in the 30's and we got thru before the rain and snow started. A good thing. The other thing that was sorta fun was I was passing runners walking. I would hear, hey, she's going faster than we are and she's walking!! I had to laugh. Also had a few who were walking/running go by and comment on what a good walker I was. I found it all humorous indeed. It was a lot of fun.

So next month is the Robie. A week later I will try again to do a Judged racewalk here in Michigan. We'll see how I feel and if I can figure out how to keep the temp from being a factor. Last year I didn't do terribly for my first (like 40:34 I think) and didn't get disqualified so a bonus but did end up down by that afternoon sick as could be. I don't want to have a repeat of that anytime soon.

I also have a 5k planned for May with my sewing guild ladies so hoping I can find one a month to do around just to keep moving and see if I can improve over time. emoticon emoticon
