My Epiphany!!!

Sunday, March 07, 2010

Okay, tonight I was laying in bed thinking about my weight loss among other things and identified I lose more pounds when not in challenges.. and I was really asking myself why. Than it came to me.. (this is my epiphany!!!)

I am motivated intrinsically, and not extrinsically. I probably lost most of you there unless you are a psychology major, as I am, so let me explain. Currently, we are learning in my Motivation and Emotion Psychology class that there are two types of motivation which I mentioned above. Intrinsically is when you are motivated from within such as when you are happy to do it. Extrinsically is when you are motivated to do it by external factors such as money or someone telling you to do it!

THIS is why I cannot lose weight in the challenges/contests. I always I thought it was mental - and it is. I just didn't realize it was my motivation part. I was trying to be extrinsically motivated by money or my coach when I am intrinsically motivated such as buying smaller clothes..

Besides understanding why I cannot lose weight in challenges, I am also very excited to realize I learned something in class, and applied it. This shows I do fully understand the concepts! How amazing is that! Seriously, I am SOOO excited.

Hey thanks everyone! I was very happy to share! :)

Joanne, I was the same way. For a long time, I struggled with losing weight while in the challenges but it fell off when I wasn't. It didn't make sense to me. I think that is why I was so excited to link it together!

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Great to hear, buying smaller clothes is an excellent motivator :-)

emoticon Gotta LOVE those emoticon moments. What you have written is really very interesting to me. I always thought I didn't do well with the challenges or contests because I'm not competetive enough. I didn't realize that I just respond better to instrinsic motivation. Thanks for enlightening us!
