A reason women gain...

Monday, March 01, 2010

I came upon this article in my email today listing 5 reasons why, as women, we may be gaining weight even though we do all the right things. I'm not quite to menopause yet, but it's coming down the pike...read on...

From WEBMD...

You May Be Gaining Weight Because of Menopause

Women reach menopause at a range of ages, but most are in midlife and are often less physically active than when they were younger. Along with aging comes a natural slowing of metabolism. At the same time, hormonal changes can trigger hunger, depression, and poor sleep.

"It is multifactoral. When women go through menopause, they lose estrogen, causing their shapes to change -- usually a loss of hip and thigh weight. And they start to gain more in the middle," says Bowerman. She explains that estrogen favors fat deposition in the lower body, and when you lose this hormone, fat is more likely to be deposited in the midsection (much like men). This spare tire around the middle has been not so affectionately called the "menopot."

The key to avoiding this extra belly fat is to maintain and increase the amount of lean body mass, which will, in turn, increase your metabolism or calorie burn rate.

"Women need to understand how critically important weight lifting and strength training is to their health," says Bowerman. And don't worry, doing strength training won't make women muscle-bound, experts say.

Exercise also helps offset bone loss that can come with menopause. A combination of exercise and a healthy, calorie-controlled diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is the answer to thwarting menopausal weight gain.

RAWWWK ON! That's all absolutely correct. I will be 62 in May and the fight began for me in my late 40's. I was in the best shape of my life at 45. You MUST FIGHT BACK!!!! THAT IS ESSENTIAL to getting through it. I started gaining and then fought it with exercise and "tricking" my brain into actually thinking it was getting younger by losing the weight instead of gaining it! It worked! The hot flashes subsided. My skin tone improved as well as all the other menopause symptoms. It was a battle, but I WON!!!!!!! So far, so good. It was like "going through a tunnel and coming out the other side" still in tact. Some of the memory lose has adjusted itself and gotten much better. That was one of the most unsettling things about menopause. Good luck in going through this "phase" . It's like puberty or any other phase as far as I'm concerned and doesn't have to be all bad. A good attitude is essential. Be ready! Love and hugs to you, my friend.....XO MaryAnn
PS Oh....and NO...I didn't take any medication at all. Just vitamins and protein powder.

Great blog. I have been experiencing this and it is horrible. My stomach is getting larger, the legs smaller and the weight is harder to get off and I'm beginning to look like my mother "Yikes".
