Spreading the Spark at Work
Friday, February 26, 2010
I got an opportunity to spread the spark at work and it is a very rewarding feeling. There is a young lady who is new in our office. She is only 23 years old, married with one child. The two of us are always the first to get into the office, I get in at around 6.40a.m though I don't have to start work until 8.00a.m. So everyday I get in, put down my bags and go for a one hour walk. I take another walk at lunch hour.
Apparently this lady has been observing my morning ritual and she opened up to me a few days ago to ask why I do this. So I explained to her about my desire to live a healthier, more active life. She told me that she is also very unhappy about her weight but nothing she does seems to make any difference. She even brought me some photos, just to show me how small she was before she got the baby. I really felt her pain as she explained the agony of finding clothes that fit, not being able to go up a flight of stairs without getting breathless and feeling pain in her joints. I could really relate to her pain because I have been there.
The first thing I explained to her was that it took time to pile on the extra pounds and therefore it would definitely take time to shed it off. There is no easy way to lose weight and keep it off permanently. You have to make painful changes if you want a worthwile result. We talked at length about small changes that she could start with, things that would not overwhelm or discourage her. Then I referred her to sparkpeople.com and adviced her to just start by perhaps reading some of the articles and checking out some members' pages (people have some amazing stories on this site!)
I am determined to help her if she will let me. She is so young and she has her whole life ahead of her. She has so much to live for and it is easy to see that her weight is keeping her from enjoying her life as she should. She has a very low self-esteem and yet she is a very pretty young woman.
Help me pray for wisdom as I try to help her. Lets wait and see how it goes.
