Cake Auction

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

My son's cub scout pack has a cake decorating contest where they auction off the cakes. Everyone bids for their own cake..., it's just how it works. So I got stuck making this cake at the last minute this afternoon..., again (it's really suppose to be father and son, but they can't seem to get it together). It is really hard to decorate a cake and not eat any frosting or anything. I couldn't do it. We were putting a "flaming arrow" on this cake, and we did so with gummy candies and licorice. So, then knowing that this cake is coming home, I did not really use cake at all. It's No Pudge Brownie mix with some frosting on it. It looks kind of sad and small, but last year we got stuck with this huge white cake that I ate a good portion of. If I am going to be coerced into baking and re-buying my own cake, it's not going to be some large fat ladened cake. I plan to wipe off the frosting and have myself a piece of fat free brownie tonight. If I just prepare myself next year, maybe I will make one of those cakes sweetened with applesauce..., something with carrots and raisons. This year is a little hectic, and it was thrown on me at the last minute. I feel a little bad for my poor son tonight, taking in that tiny little "cake", but really we don't need cake.

Ugg.., I just got a call that I need to go down with the checkbook. I wonder how much we bought our cake for. This is not my favorite fund raiser. Bah humbug. I think I am just a bit grouchy today.

That's too funny. I've never tried no-pudge brownies (seen the mix, though) - is it good? I guess it is, if you used it! LOL.

My son's cub scout pack did this too but they put them up for auction so we had to try and make really interesting ones (I'd go on the internet to find ideas). It was fun making them together, but I had a problem with eating the frosting too!! And I would bid on cakes and hope I didn't win so I wouldn't have to bring them home. It was a fun night, but I hated it so much!!!!!

Wow. What a lame fundraiser. At least you aren't stuck buying someone else's idea of a good cake...

Maybe you could do that angel food cake with the seltzer water next time? Here's the recipe:

    1 Angel food cake mix
1 can of diet Sprite or 7-up (generic works as well) - or seltzer if you don't want the artificial sweeteners...

How about next time decorating the cake...buying it...then "donating" it to another family to take home! This way your son has fun decorating, the scouts make money, and you don't have to be tempted! :)

Ohhh you are a planner!! It is funny though that you buy the stuff for your cake... then spend time making it.. only to spend more money buying it back... they'd have probably made more money (with less effort) just to write them a check upfront! LOL

I am very impressed with your self control!! dang... gummies.. licorice.. icing.. dang, you ARE good!

Interesting tradition! EHheee. At least you had the forethought to go ahead and use the brownie mix. That's pretty cool.

Good luck, Jeannie! You've got plenty of time to find your favorite cake recipe for next time! :)

    Hugs!
