Engage!!
Thursday, August 20, 2009
For many of us, life has become a passive thing. You go about your daily activities, go home, eat dinner and watch TV then go to sleep. You see news stories about health care reform and all the falsehoods being spread by malicious, self-serving talk show hosts that cause those unruly town hall meetings and just cringe. You take it all in then feel disgusted and powerless.
Have you noticed that in today's journalism, as practiced on TV, whoever shouts the loudest must be telling the truth! The media is actually empowering these people to the point that they have a stronger influence on your life than any lobbyist or for that matter, any elected official.
How do you change this one-sided situation? ENGAGE!! If you see a news story that is clearly not telling the truth, call the offending TV station. Tell them of your displeasure. If they are repeatedly slanting the news, write or call the Federal Communications Commission and file a complaint. Most importantly, be your own lobbyist: contact your elected officials and tell them that they will only get your vote if they vote your way.
In the 1970's, I worked in radio in an on air talent capacity. Since then, I have worked in the technical side of broadcasting and then for other industries. After all these years, I am going to look for an air personality job on a talk radio station because that is how I intend to engage! Like many radio people, my on the air name is not my real name.
Engage, let your voice be heard!
