The Devil in Long-Johns

A few years ago, I peaked out at nearly 300 pounds. I never got back on the scales after hitting 298, until I'd started losing. At that time, I was so far into the state of denial, I needed a passport to return to reality. I never looked into a full length mirror. Instead, I focused on chest up - was my top on straight? How was my hair, make-up, earrings? OK, presentable - let's go. I saw a picture someone took of me at work, and it was a rude awakening. Why was Jabba the Hutt wearing my scrub top?

I tried just about every diet plan out there - Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, Nutrisystem. Low carb, low fat, high protein, low salt, supplements, pills and potions. Joined a gym, bought a Nordic track, got a stationary bike, ran, walked. OK, the running was a long time ago while I was still active duty Army Nurse Corps, and I was pretty much forced to do it. After getting out of the service, I went from fat to obese to morbidly obese (more than 100 pounds overweight), and from semi-fit altho fat to sluggo. The gym closed and I didn't join another one. Nordic track hurt my back, so I sold it. Running hurt my knees,so I quit. Bike hurt my knees, so it gathered dust. Big dogs (lab, large mixed breed, and cocker) got old, ill, and died, so I quit walking.

Nov 06, I got the lap-band surgery. Started losing weight. Found SparkPeople from another website and joined in June 07. Didn't do much with it. Discovered ice cream slips thru the lap-band and stopped losing weight. Got my Pom, Shalako, July 07. She weighed 7 pounds. She'd had knee surgery just before I got her. Between that and my cocker getting old & ill, I didn't walk her and overfed her. She ballooned up to 14 pounds. After Sir Marks died, I started walking Shalako - a block, 2 blocks, slowly increasing to half a mile. Got Samurai who is a fireball. Tinier than Shalako, but extremely active. He jumped right into the walks.

Got active in SP Dec 08. I'm using Nutrisystem as my basic foods, since I can grab them and go -- heat and eat at work. Started tracking my food and exercise - started losing weight again, 30 pounds since Christmas. Walks have gotten longer. Started the Sweatsuit to Swimsuit bootcamp this month. Hades is cooling off!! I've jogged a few minutes during the last couple of weeks on walks. The devil started wearing long-johns to stay warm. Dusted off my bike and have ridden it a couple of times recently. Yep, Hades has had frost in the mornings.

SparkPeople.com, and the people I've met on SP, have changed my life. Mucho thanks to everyone who has written to me, given me spark goodies, written their own interesting and motivating blogs, and, just generally, been supportive! Everybody needs friends and help. emoticon
