Spending the last 3 summers on crutches has really put a toll on my buttocks...and everything else connected to it. I went down into the basement last week and "visited" with my bags of sizes 8-10 and 12 clothing. I had a heart to heart talk with them and promised to make a diligent effort to get them back upstairs in my closet where they belong...

In the summer of 2005 when I broke my foot, I weighed 132 and wore a size 10, a weight and size I had pretty much maintained during the previous 5 years. Around that same time I had also ended a 4-year relationship. Like many others, I eat when I'm depressed, lonely and bored. Six months later I found myself at 142 pounds and wearing a size 12. Since I’m only 5 feet tall, it only takes 10-15 pounds to bump me up to another size.

I went on diet and began to lose that weight, when the following summer I was back on crutches and before I knew it I had gained another 10 pounds.

This past summer I severely broke my left leg and spent 3 full months on crutches, and another 2 months afterward limping around, trying to get the strength and flexibility back. I actually lost a few pounds when I first got injured, but during the long recovery I gained those back and added a few more, putting me solidly into a size 14 … a size I hadn’t worn since before the “Phen-Fen” days back in 1996.

Other factors that lead to me gaining weight:

1. I have the ability to keep on eating long after I’m full and satisfied. I learned this growing up in the “clean your plate” era.

2. I love food. Fortunately I usually don’t have sweet tooth, but I did pig out on Wendy’s cheese cake (it’s to die for) over the holidays

3. There’s absolutely no connection between my metabolism and my appetite.

There you have it.

I haven’t always had a problem with my weight, though. From high school up until I turned 40, my weight ranged between 99 and 115. I actually weighed 99 when I got pregnant with my 4th child (she’s now 21) and weighed 99 again when she was 2 years old.

Something happened the year I turned 40, and I started to put on weight. The summer of 1993, I was up to 120, and by the following summer I was up to a whopping 150. A 30 pound gain in one year!

From then on, every time I went out of town for a week on business or vacation, I put on another 5 pounds. By the fall of 1996, I was at my all time high of 165 pounds, and in a size 16.

Then along came Phen-Fen…which I started taking, and over the next 5 months lost 40 pounds , was down to 125, and back into a size 8. It was the summer of 97 and I looked great…but it didn’t last long. I hadn’t developed any good exercise or eating habits and the weight slowed crept back on. 2 years later I was back up to 165 and stayed that way for another year.

In the fall of 2000, I decided to take up jogging and start dieting… but for the life of me I can’t remember which diet I went on. Sugar Busters, maybe. I never liked working out in public, so I would get up at 5:30 and jog about 2 miles before work at least 2 or 3 times a week, rain or shine. By the Spring of 2001, I had lost about 40 pounds, weighed 128, and was back in a size 8.

For the next 5 years, my weight hovered around 130, and I was mostly wearing a size 10. As had become usual, I would put on 5 pounds every time I went out of town for week on vacation or business, but then I would immediately work to try to get it back off. That brings us up to 2005, and the beginning of my “annual summers on crutches events.”

My Goals:
* Get back into a size 10

* Walk silently through the office wearing a skirt (a/k/a, don't hear the swish-swish sound of my pantyhosed thighs rubbing against each other.)


My Program:
*30-minute brisk walks 4 to 5 times a week

* logging everything I put into my mouth, regardless of how embarrassing it is

* Measuring everything I eat to control portions

* Eliminating simple carbs from my diet 90% of the time
