    I've been reading that woolly bears shed their skins about 6 times and each time the russet band is smaller until they are all black before they form their cocoons. AND: that they typically freeze solid in the caterpillar stage, then make their cocoons in the spring . . . the Isabella tiger moth living only about 2 weeks.
