It is easy for me to educate others on being healthy, but I need to take my own advice sometimes. I want to show my patients I have to work hard towards goals of my own. We are all in this together!

My Goals:
As you will all be able to see from my weight tracker below, I am going to try to lose 50 pounds over the next year, which is about a pound a week. No one should try to lose more than that. This nice slow weight loss plan will help you keep the weight off in the long run. Don't be discouraged if your weight isn't dropping right off. You may not be losing weight because you are building muscle. The best way to measure is by how your clothes are fitting.

My Program:
I want to have a healthy lifestyle overall. I want to make sure my body is healthy in order to get pregnant in the future and I also want to raise my children with a healthy lifestyle. I believe keeping these things in mind will help me reach my goals. I will exercise more and be more conscious of the calories I am consuming.

Personal Information:
I was born and raised in Toledo, OH. I received my ADN from Owens Community College in 2005. I moved to Columbus, OH to finish my BSN at The Ohio State University. Most of my experience is from taking care of dialysis patients. It was during this experience I realized how much I wanted to educate people on the complications of diabetes. For the past 2 and a half years I have been working in diabetes education. During this time I also went back to school for my Masters of Science in Nursing and am now enrolled in a PhD in nursing program at the University of Missouri. Upon graduation I hope to research new ways to help people live well with diabetes. Although I am no longer directly educate clients on diabetes, it is my passion and I love volunteering my time and knowledge as site administrator of Diabetes Self-Management.

Other Information:
I really would like everyone to be as open as possible while using this site. I hope to watch your successes and help you with your setbacks. I hope together we will find support in managing our health, and that we are able to learn from one another as we take this journey. Thank you.

    Thank you for the team welcome mail. I was diagnosed last December with type 2. I was prescribes Actos once a day. Told to use a diabetic diet and said I could find one on the web. Also needed to lose 50 pounds. Not much more guidance than that.

    FYI, I am Type I, diagnosed in 1970, so in November it will be 40 challenging but learning years.

    Therapy is ICT, 4 or more bg tests daily. Bolus insulin is Apidra, Basal insulin is Lantus, injections 4x daily or more, depending on bg. I have been on Symlin 60 for about a month.

    I'll post other medications in a private e-mail.

    FYI, I subscribe to Diabetes Self-Management e-mail. Same group?

    I do not say "I am a Diabetic." I prefer to say "I have Diabetes." To me the difference is significant. Diabetes does not control me, it is a chronic condition I control. A favorite analogy of mine is for most people the pancreas is an automatic transmission. With Type I, mine is a stick shift!
