My name is Emily, and I'm 23. My battle with my weight is/has been ongoing throughout my entire life. I was a big kid, a product of my environment: two working parents, often left to fend for myself or dine on fast food several nights a week. The habits I learned at a young age stuck with me through my teen years, and at 17 years old my weight peaked at 287 pounds. After trying several diets and losing the mental battle to food (at that point, I ate because I was depressed- I was depressed because I was overweight) I had the Lap-band surgery, and to this day I believe it saved my life. My initial weight loss post-surgery was 147+ pounds. After college, I gained a few pounds and maintained at 145-155 pounds for several years, until I became pregnant with my son and had to have the restriction removed from my band. Pregnancy and the freedom to eat as I pleased once again resulted in a pretty epic weight gain of 65 pounds while I carried my child to term. Now, I am ready to start my weight loss journey again with a different goal in mind: not just to be thin, but to be strong, fast, agile, and push myself to the limit. My main struggle is with my negative self-talk, and overall I want to break down those mental barriers and achieve what I know deep-down I am capable of. After all, now that I am a little older and wiser, I have seen myself do things I didn't think I could- for example, work an 80 hour week, hike up a mountain, and give birth to a healthy eight pound baby boy. This go around I've decided not to use my Lap-band to aid me in my weight loss, and instead learn willpower and mental strength that will stick with me through everything. I'm dedicated to learning healthy eating habits, and figuring out how my body works to process food, and truly believe that knowledge is power.

Hey Emily! Thank you so much congratulations to you too. Your blog entries are really motivating. Thank your for the advice for the DVD I need to get one for when my daughter is sick so I can still be working out. Congratulations on your little boy he is adorable.! Stick with it and I know you can get back to where you were before you had him. You are one of the most determined people I know!

    hi there,
welcome to sparkpeople! its great to learn healthy eating habits and to keep track of what you do food and exercise! but i find the best part of spark is the support cause i dont know about you but my weight issues are all because of mindset and a mental battle with food! i found the thing that helped me most was having someone who i checked in with everyday or two to just talk about what we were going to do and what we were struggling with :)
it was going really well until my buddy had a bad week and stopped sparking altogether and well i had a few bad things happen and i too gave up but im starting again now.
so if you want an accountability buddy im more than happy to be one :)
but yeah good luck with your journey...you can do it!!!
