Ever since I left the military and my activity level dropped, I started gradually putting on weight. As I had always been reasonably active (even at my heaviest, I hiked the Inca Trail in Peru - including the 14,000 ft mountain passes) and had a reasonably healthy (low fat) diet, it had never really worried me. 12 years later, finally I am motivated to do something about it.

Cycling has become my passion, and I regularly go on 120-130 mile rides with my club, and do the longest and steepest mountain climbs in the country.

Now trying to convert my cycling passion into Triathlon by adding running and swimming. Intermediate goal is a half-marathon in May 2020.

My Goals:
Trying to get to a 'healthy' weight of 165 lbs 75 kg.
Goals for 2020:
* Ride Amy's Gran Fondo in September 2020.
* Complete a half-marathon in May 2020.


My Program:
Cycling 3-4 times per week, with a combination of long rides to improve my cruising speed on the flats, with some shorter hill intervals.

Running 4 times per week.

I have become a bit of an exercise data geek, and keep a close eye on my performance, training load and recovery through Garmin, Training Peaks and Strava.

Bodyweight strength training + 25 kg (55lb) dumbbells, depending on the exercise

Melbourne, Australia having recently relocated from Seattle in the US.


Other Information:
Feeling really great that I have got my BMI under 30 (14 Oct 06). I'm no longer obese, merely overweight.

    Hi,

    The only local Australian Grand Fondo in late January that I could find was the Santos Tour Down Under Challenge. The route look very hilly and was identified as Stage 4 of the Pro Tour.

    There was not much information about grade or vertical climb. The distance was listed as 158.5km. The information the website was vague at best.

    Is this the Fondo you participated? The photos make this look like a very hard climb.

    The fat bike in the snow is fun...but is a MAJOR workout. Your weight gain history sounds like mine. I got it under control at your age and then it crept back on after some health issues. I too have hiked the Inca trail and am a cyclist. Longest ride is 200 miles in a day. You need to do this....just go for it (find a flat area).

    Thank you very much for the clear, concise answer. I'm struggling with the aging issue of loss of elasticity. Feels punitive to a person working to sustain good health. Note to overweight young people: Lose it now while your skin has elasticity!
