I am a 52 year old single mother who has decided to live life to it's fullest before I die. My first born son was diagnosed with Diabetes when he was 16 years old. I had spent so much of my life in fear of losing him that I put the whole family on a Diabetic diet. At 22years old, his first heart attack happened. We found him dead in his bed one fear had come to reality. Trained in CPR, we my daughter & I revived him, waiting on the Rescur Squad to arrive. They said we would not be able to lift him on the strecher or get him out the door.
That was the moment that changed my life, momma epinephrine kicked in. There was two paramedics, momma and an 11 year old sister who found strength to get him help! One hour later and missing the wall to his bedroom, we were on our way to Hospital. At the hospital he weighed in at 483 # and went into a coma that lasted 43 days. I had to change something . I would not bury my son! Four months after that day, he came home on 300 units of insulin a day, weighed in at 402# on discharge.
The other thing I will share with you is that I think the word DIET is a dirty four letter word. I believe eating healthy gives us a better mind set to complete goals. Diet does not include exercise so diet to me equals starvation. Something my son taught me! (Not interested in starving myself but can I make good healthy choices......I think we all can!)
At home, we decided we would "Work for Food!" There was a 1.2 mile track at the school down the street. It was summer and open to public use. So, everyday we got up to a diabetic breakfast and headed to the track. On the follow-up appointment 3 months later, he weighed in at 384#. Insulin was reduced to 70 units a day. He had gone from 1/2 lap at turtle pace to 10 laps a day at moderate speed. 90 days later, we were off insulin onto diabetic pills, doing 25 laps a day, and weighing in at 352. Yes, weight loss trend does slow down but still loosing, still counts for progress!
Lesson learned from all of this.... that we have to add exercise to everyday, to really be healthy. I share this with you to let everyone know the secret is.......go do 1/2 a lap if that is where you need to start. I would say to him daily, you give me enough work son and I will give you any sugar-free treet you want! But first "work for your food"! It really does make the difference. I seen it with my own eye's. And , he did claim his snack everyday.
Proud to say 11 years later he is at 285# and holding. Well, when I turned 40 and "that mid-life thing" took over, I didn't notice the little changes. I am ashamed to say, it caught up. Now, 12 years of catching up....I need to start "working harder everyday for my food"!
