Hello SparkFriends, I'm Monty!
~The Journey Is Real!
~ In 1975, I left the Armed Forces with a 25% disability! I was told that I would be in a wheelchair by the time I was 45! To date, I still have spinal nerve damage but have found ways to carry on in training for Runs and Triathlons!
~After being an athlete at a younger age, and going through weight fluctuation all my life, I had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in 2000, messed up all my blood work numbers, ate garbage, and forgot what exercise was! My maximum density had reached 258 lbs! After a reality check and ten years, I got rid of 30 lbs. But I slipped and started going back up. After moving to Fl, I was down to around 222.
~On Oct 17, 2010, I was around 215 when introduced to SP! By the end of that month, I had started walking, I realized strength training again, I started fueling clean, and accepted a healthier lifestyle. (Slowly but safely.) I also discovered I loved walking 5Ks.
~I had done 4 official 5Ks and always envied the runners going by. I trained and became a runner at 61! Since Nov. 2010, I've done over 80 5Ks, 2 8K, 8 10K, 5 15Ks, 1 10Miler, 20 Half Marathons, 5 Duathlons, 24 Triathlons, & 1 Marathon! I turn 69 years young on May 25, 2019. I am starting my 6th year as a member of the Outspokin Bicycles Triathlon Team!
~I completed my 1st Marathon, The Marine Corps Marathon, on Oct 22, 2017 at 67 years old!
~I lost 57 lbs inside of 7 months, a total of 100 lbs! I reached my goal weight, since adjusted for running/Triathlon performance, and have been maintaining for over 8 years! I'm on the journey and I love it! SparkPeople provides me a source of accountability. The best way I can pass it forward is to be a positive force, lead by example, and help everyone here along our journey!
~In Mar 2019, I celebrated 10 years cancer free! I'm embracing the fact that I'm a survivor for a reason! Hope!
~ I am now a Certified Strength & Conditioning Instructor and a Livestrong Program Instructor at The Y!

** There are slight bumps in the journey's road. DON'T dwell on them. Taking a break or leaving for a while only hurts you, and makes for easy excuses! Focus on your dreams and you will soar to your goals. Do it for you!
It's simple. I want to be able to enjoy a longer life with my family here in Paradise! I'm taking back the years lost! Commitment, consistency, and persistence with no excuses or walking away is the winner's way! I am accountable. I wouldn't want it any other way! #staystrong #noexcuses #neverquit #enjoylife

1) Focus on safe running & better training practices.

6) Training Now to Swim on a Relay Team to Complete The 8.6 Mile Swim for Alligator Lighthouse in Islamorada, FL!

For 2019:
1) Continue as a role model for my granddaughter and to work to inspire others.
2) Continue to represent Outspokin Multisport Team
3) Optimize Nutrition.
4) Always cook healthy.
5) Always be in learning mode.
6) Stay positive and passionate about life!
7) Stay in Permanent Training Mode.
8) Plan to do another Ironman 70.3!

- I'm "retired" after 32 years of government service with the last 24 at The Pentagon. :P

- Member of Racehawk, a Triathlon/Road Race Management Team.

- I've been to hell on earth! I've had 7 near death experiences!
I'm a survivor, still suffer guilt, and controlling depression BUT I'm now embracing Life!

    I'm glad you enjoyed my blog! The salsa pork chops really were amazing. You should definitely try them! I bet the rice/beans would be delicious as a side! I sauteed some mixed veggies instead, which was also good... and one of my favorite things to do. Baking w/salsa is good too! I had some fish baked with salsa on top and that was awesome as well! Thats the fun part... experimenting and trying something new!

    Hey There! My husband is from Annapolis, MD and we were stationed in DC. We lived in Centreville for a time, my MIL lived in Fairfax, SIL in Burke, and we've got family that are living in Vienna right now... Most of his family lives in Crofton, Bowie, etc. I'm originally from Panama City, FL.

    I loved it up there, just the traffic was horrendous and well, we know the winters were... Serious winter! How are you liking the Old Florida area! We've been in Dunedin about 4 months and I think I'm finally getting adjusted. :-)

    Welcome to SparkPeople. I am so glad that you found us. There is a lot of information here and the best tools to help you reach your goals.

    I have been on SparkPeople since April 2009 and I have lost over 20 pounds and I have kept it off with the help of this website! I track my food every day (good and bad) and I track my exercise. You can check out my SparkPage and see my fitness and food tracking. I put it all out there for everyone to see – the good, the bad and the ugly. It helps keep me honest! Are there days when I eat stuff that I know I shouldn’t – of course. This is a life long journey, one with many paths to take. I just have to keep making the right choices and when I don’t, I get back on the right path and don’t look back.

    The encouragement and motivation I get from my Spark friends is amazing. They are always there to help me through tough times and bring a smile to my face. I have found that if I post something that is bothering me, within an hour someone will respond back and make sure everything is alright and offer encouragement.

    One of the best things that you can do for yourself is to find a few good teams that you will check in with every day. When you are looking at teams that you might be interested in, check how old the posts are. If you find that no one has posted to it for a few weeks then I would suggest you keep looking. You need daily support and interaction with other team members. I invite you to check out Spin Me A Yarn and/or Australian Cattle Dog Lovers teams, which I am the team leader of. See if it is something that interests you. I try to keep it fun and interesting on both teams.

    Being new, I would suggest that you use Your Spark Points (click on View SparkPoints) as a map to the site. It is a good way to see what is new and a great tool for any situation.
