Update: 2018 - Well 2018 hasn't gone as well as 2017. At the end of November last year I sprained my MCL (medial collateral ligament) and was using a walker at this time last year. Needless to say getting back on track has been difficult. I went into pity mode and started drinking and eating too much. So...I've gained back 30 lbs and my knees are still hurting. So I finally went to my Doctor about it (instead of just physio) and its possible I also have a torn meniscus (hence the pain). So MRI ...
So MRI is in the works and then possibly surgery to repair it. In the meantime trying to find balance with the drinking and eating and go to aquafit 2x a week, which I can do. Hoping that 2019 is a better year!
My goals for 2017 are to lose a total of 49 lbs. and walk in two 5K charity events this year. 1 = Relay for Life (4K) on May 13th,
and 2 = Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope (5K) on Sept. 10th. (Get to 150 lbs - a total of 101 lbs lost) by Dec 31, 2017. Interim goal to get to 170 lbs by May 31/17.)
To help meet my goalsI will:
~ Do aquafit 2x a week (1 deep water class)
~ In July and August start swimming lengths aiming to increase from 10 mins to 1 hour by the end of the summer
~ Walk 40 mins. 4x week
~ For May, June and July work with a personal trainer 1 day per week
~ Will follow the SP diet suggestions modifying as required to suit my tastes but stay within the calorie range suggested and most of the time near the middle to lower end of the range
~ Stick with my 3 phase alcohol management plan (Jan - Apr -0-, May to Sep 6 drinks per week, Sep to Dec - 2 drinks per week except for special occassions).
2016: Year-end Update: Goals attained in 2016 - 59 lbs lost in the year! Exercise increased from nil to walking 20 to 30 mins (or more when doing aqua fit) 6 days a week!
Original Goals:
1st Goal - To loss 10% (25 lbs) - Goal met Mar 27/16 (Revised to 30 lbs)- Goal met Apr 18/16
2nd Goal - To get to Wonderland (199 lbs, 52 lbs weight loss) - Goal met Sep 23/16
2016: I'm now 64 yrs old and have been heavy most of my life. I've done the yo-yo thing several times and am at my highest weight ever! 18 years ago I lost 60 Ilb with Weight Watchers and kept it off for 3 years. Then...I got married and moved away from my support group and then my Mom died and it all went to the dogs. Then in about 2008 I found out about SP (see year-end updates below). Then my daughter died at age 40 and I lost it! I think my mindset was that I shouldn't be alive if she was dead! But I think I'm over that now (OK I still feel it but I want to live)! I retired last year and I'm determined to focus on me and my health this year (and from now on). My goal for this year is to lose 51 lbs and get to wonderland (199 lbs). Then I'm determined to get back to that pre-married weight (170 lbs), which is still an unhealthy BMI but much better than what I am right now! Then I'll start working on getting to a healthy BMI.
2008 Year-End Update: Well its been just over a year now since I joined SP and I've almost reached my pre-married weight (just 5 lbs to go!) On this journey I've lost over 50 lbs, developed good eating habits & incorporated regular fitness activity into my lifestyle. I know now that this journey is forever because its just too easy to fall back into those "old" habits. One of my fitness goals was to start running again and starting Jan 9, 2009 I'll be attending the "Learn to Run" clinic run by the Running Room. GO Mary GO!! Thank you to all those out there in SP land who have helped motivate me along the way! I can't wait to see what changes I'll be able to record at the end of 2009!!
2009 Update: WooHoo !! Feb 15/09 I have met my original goal of getting back to my pre-married weight of 170 lbs! (Total lost to date - 56 lbs). Now the adventure continues to lose another 44 lbs, of which I'm aiming to lost 30 this year! I love SPARKPEOPLE! [Update: I actually was able to walk/run a 5K a couple of days after my daughter passed away but after that I lost my focus completely -- see below).
2010 Update: Well it just wasn't a good year. My daughter died in April of 2009 and I lost focus completely. I've now gained back all but 1.5 lbs of the weight I worked so hard to lose! So we're starting over. I did it before with the help of SP and I can do it again!
2011-2015 Update: I've tried on and off since my daughter died to try and get back to losing weight and increasing my fitness but it just hasn't stuck. Please cheer for my 2016 attempt!
